Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Serious readers will welcome this inviting first volume in a new series on Van Gogh. Based on extensive research gathered throughout this century, including the catalogues raisonn?s by de la Faille (1928) and Jan Hulsker (1980), this work focuses on Van Gogh's Dutch periodAhis beginnings as a painter. A total of 44 color reproductions from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam are included in the catalog section, ranging from somber still lifes to landscapes to emotive character studies that include "The Potato Eaters." Each painting is intensely scrutinized in the accompanying commentary, and its materials, composition, size, provenance, literature, and places exhibited are listed as well. Two brief, prefatory essays discuss the paintings' original owner, Van Gogh's brother, Theo, and the influence of his cousin, Anton Mauve, a most underrated but important early teacher. Future volumes are planned, two more on painting and five on drawings, making this collection-oriented and highly readable Van Gogh scholarship worthy of most research, academic, and larger public libraries.AEllen Bates, New York
