Another lovely CD of Slavic harmony from Kitka; some intriguing new songs, but overall not as even as their prior CD "Nectar". Kitka continues to push the boundaries of this genre; their sound grows better each year, although the song selection is uneven.

I had the great pleasure to see KITKA in concert at my university last semester, and got an advance copy of the new album. It was truly amazing. The album's got a great variety of songs, my personal favorite being Zaplakala E Gorata. It's so mournful and the harmony is, as always, flawless. It's become an instant favorite of mine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent as usual, November 7, 2002

This is my second Kitka cd and once again I am delighted. Every song has it's own appeal and even though the languages are foreign to me, the sentiment is strong and the listening pure enjoyment. This group of women transport us over borders and time and expose us to harmonies and melodies that have burst from ancient churches and Eastern European family circles. Now if we could only get them a gig in Edmonton, Alberta...

5.0 out of 5 stars Kitka never disappoints, March 3, 2008
This review is from: The Vine (MP3 Download)
I bought this after visiting Kitka's site and hearing a few of the songs. I've loved their performances on Prairie Home Companion and at Seattle Folk Life and already owned a couple of their CDs. Needless to say, I was predisposed to love this album. Totally worth buying every single track, and I rarely do that when I do an MP3 download. Thanks for this hauntingly beautiful album.

I bought this disc after randomly hearing Kitka perform somwhere on my radio dial last year. I am new to this genre of music, and I was blown away by the extremely unusual harmonies and melodies. Being of Eastern European heritage, I am thrilled to see the traditional songs of Bulgaria, Russia, Georgia and nearby being revived by this wonderful group of women. This is the first Kitka CD I have bought and cannot speak to the quality of this compared to other discs. I was, however, extremely pleased with this unexpected purchase.

Being that my usual music tastes are brit pop and indie rock bordering on adult contemporary alterna-pop, I myself am surprised that I listen to this cd so much. I find that it awakens my creativity just as well as any jumpy house music or the usual White Boy Band pop. This type of music is perfect for dreamy fall days; I have found myself listening to this disc every day in the month of November. It just fits.

The description of the lyrics in the sleeve make me smile. From track number 5, "Ne Po Pogrebu Bochonochek Kataetsja:"

"'That's not a barrel rolling in the cellar, my young, white swan.' A flirtatious love song about Marichaka and her fiance, Ivan. She takes his shoes off one at a time, then his belt, and curls up next to him, 'no longer afraid of anything.'"

How can anyone *not* be intrigued?
