DO NOT OVERLOOK!!, January 8, 2011
This review is from: The Vine Rhyme Herbal (Paperback)
What I think is wonderful about this book is how thorough it is. It gives magic, mythical and medical uses for a variety of herbs and plants. Without being pretentious, it delivers a really broad scope of information. Written in rhyme, each entry contains the following:
*A drawing of the plant or herb
*Common and Latin name
*A poetic description of the plant or herb
*The medicinal parts and how they are prepared (for example, dried or fresh)
*The best way to harvest
*Storage tips
*Magical powers (particularly astrological)
*Medical powers (including if it is poisonous to certain populations, like epileptics and pregnant women)
*Medical dosages (perhaps the most important of all!)
There is a space for notes, which I've used to write my own recipes or where I can find it or if I have it on my own collection, etc.
You won't find a bunch of how-to stuff beyond the info given for each plant. The book is a reference for folks who already have a basic working knowledge of magical and medical plant use. And it doesn't discriminate on plants that may have a legal status, like marijuana, which has a long history of medicinal uses. This book fills in knowledge and is fun to look things up and read aloud.
The author is a Master Herbalist, so you know this info comes from a scientific background and a great deal of research. My only wish was that the cover had a sharper image and the plant pictures were in color.
All in all, a great reference book that is fun to refer to and contains all the info a magical person could want. It feels like an old grimoire, even if the cover doesn't support that feeling. I recommend it to anyone interested in going beyond the magical correspondences for herbs and plants who may be considering herbs for health and well being. A great find!
