Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Delivering descriptions of nearly 300 wineries from Argentina to Venezuela, South American Vineyards, Wineries, and Wines is the most comprehensive guide to the rich wine culture of South America. The 608-page edition reviews 1,500 wines, which were sampled blindly and rated by a team of professional tasters from Argentina, Chile, Brazil, and Uruguay.

With maps of wine-producing regions included in the book, you will find South American Vineyards, Wineries, and Wines an invaluable resource when deciding on a South American wine, whether you are ordering a bottle at a local restaurant or planning a tour of Peruvian vineyards.

Among its formidable wine listings, South American Vineyards, Wineries, and Wines features the top 50 wines of South America, which were selected from the best of the 8 wine-producing South American countries. The ranked wines participated in multiple tasting rounds that resulted in their selection by a panel of judges and certification by a notary public.

The guide, which accepts no advertising or endorsements from wineries, stands alone in the North American market as an inclusive, definitive resource on South American wines. With South American Vineyards, Wineries, and Wines, Austral Spectator has created a book that will escort readers through the complex, often daunting task of selecting wine from a novel and compelling market.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great guide to South American wine world, June 25, 2004
By

This review is from: Vineyards, Wineries & Wines of South America (Guide) - 2004 (Paperback)
I've spent the summer traveling in South America, and this guide has been indispensable. Although I don't always agree with the ratings (since wine preferences are inherently personal), I respect the thorough descriptions and methodology which went into creating the rankings. The style of writing is informative and even covers some politics, an unavoidable aspect of South American wines. And finally, it's in two languages, a rare find in a book of this quality and detail. (What better way to practice learning another language...)

Overall, I have been extremely happy with my wine discoveries (particularly in Argentina), and I feel I owe much of it to this guide. I hope that it will continue to improve and expand in future editions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little guide!, January 11, 2005
This review is from: Vineyards, Wineries & Wines of South America (Guide) - 2004 (Paperback)
This book is a bilingual guide to wines of South America. The wines featured in this book are from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

This book contains maps on the location of the wineries, descriptions of the wines from that region and prices for each bottle. There is also information about each winery, such as their production capacity, contact information, including website addresses.

There are no photographs in this guide, just illustrated maps. I found the descriptions of the scent and flavor of each wine designed more for the wine drinker, and not a novice wanting to learn about wine.

Having lived in South America for a small time, I have to say that South America has wonderful resources, and we should help them out by trying out their wines too. Usually, I have found that their products are cheaper than European products.

A lovely guide!
