5.0 out of 5 stars Cold Blood - Tight, Funky, & (finally) LIVE!!!, May 9, 2002
By

This review is from: Vintage Blood: Live! 1973 (Audio CD)
I have been a fan of Cold Blood since their great debut LP in 1969. Luckily I saw them once at the Eastowne Ballroom in Detroit 1971. They were the opening act of a 3 band show. After the bands intro instrumental "Shop Talk", vocalist Lydia Pense became the focus of the stage. She was vocally loose, and very stage active! Behind her the rhythm section cooked. Keyboardist Raul Matute purred his Hammond, Bass man Rod Ellicott oddly played a funky Hofner (beatle) bass. Their horn section was very tight, adding punch to every song, very well arranged. I walked out that night loving every minute of their set, and much bigger fan than before. I bought all of their subsequent LP's, and hoped to see them play again soon. This small label 1973 sound board recording on DIG Music brings me back to that evening. Although this CD offers only 5 songs (40+ minutes) with minimal audience (no mention of the recording date or location), Cold Blood plays all the songs with pure Funk and Fire! The songs have added vitality "Live", vocals in key, horns are crisp, nothing sounds tired! No, this is not one of those "We have played these songs for WAAAAY too many years, and sorry, we are only here for the money" sets. Lydia's Voice sounds great, she is loose, and hits some astonishingly high notes. On this "One of a kind" release, Cold Blood is enjoying the music that is truly their own. A blend of Lydia soulful voice, and pure Stax arrangements. Oddly nothing here sounds outdated almost 30 years later! How they ever came out of the bay area I will never completely understand? The only negatives of this CD release are the short set, and mono recording (Hopefully they can expand on the length of this CD release). It is however truly a document of their early 70's "Live" shows. So for anyone who enjoyed Cold Blood, you will LOVE this dream CD! Unfortunately I never saw them again live, but with this CD they confirm exactly what I heard that night 3 decades ago. The tightest 70's Soul Band west of the Mississippi!

This is one of those weird small label releases. Mono. Virually nothing in the way of liner notes. From the sound of it, I am guessing this was one of those KSAN live-in-the-studio broadcasts. The audio is good for the time, although on "Funky On My Back", towards the end, the sound abruptly goes lo-fi, and stays that way for the rest of the CD.
If you are a Cold Blood fan, you will probably want this.
