I love baking and decided to buy this cookbook. I started with the Poor Man's Pound Cake since I had all the ingredients in my pantry. The recipe tells you to use a greased loaf pan for baking. When I poured it in, it seemed very full but pound cake doesn't rise much so I put it in the oven. After 15 minutes bake time, smoke started coming out of my oven. I checked it and the cake batter was leaking over and into the bottom of the oven. I put a cookie sheet under it and from the amount overflowed into the cookie sheet, it looks like the measurements may work for two loaf pans. I will still try other recipes in this book, but beware on this recipe and split the pound cake batter to two loaf pans. My standard loaf pans are 8-1/2 x 4-1/2 x 2-1/2.

The finished pound cake had a nice flavor but the texture when sliced, was closer to cornbread than cake and it seemed a bit greasy. I will not make the pound cake recipe from this book again.

I'm glad I got this book for free. I made the one pan apple cake today and it looked awful when it was cooked. It tasted okay though. But when I was making the cake I wondered if there were enough ingredients to fill a 20cm square tin and there wasn't. It didn't rise much either and I put extra baking powder in. I converted the measurements to Australian as I assumed this was an American book.
