I first reviewed this product about a year ago, but my review never appeared on Amazon. I don't know why. But because I wish to save my fellow Amazon buyers torment, let me repeat that, being myself an abacus collector and enthusiast, I can honestly state the following: This was the worst product of ANY type I have ever received through Amazon. The beads on mine not only stuck together, but the entire assembly had never been varnished. Thus the wood stain not only smelled atrociously, and transferred to my fingertips, but I was forced by my family to wrap it in a plastic bag and get it out of the house before the whole place became unlivable. I attempted to scrub the wood stain from my hands for several minutes before giving up. It took several days for the stain to wear away, and several hours to air out the house. I don't know if the positive reviews on this page are plants by the manufacturer, or what, but trust me: Everything about the materials and manufacture of this product is cheap. In short, THIS IS NOT A WORKING ABACUS, so don't expect to use it for either learning or teaching. I know abacuses and use them daily, and I can tell you there are many far superior and cheaper models available on Amazon. And they can actually function as an abacus. So skip this one.

The abacus came in a case that was beautiful!!
When I first got it some of the beads were stuck, but they worked free after
a little while. The book that comes with it is not the best instructional book
I've seen. I highly recommend "How to Use a Chinese Abacus" by Paul Green.

Looks great, isn't a wood box per se though and the vinyl isn't all that great. The abacus is not as sturdy as it appears. It will work fine and looks good, but it is mostly a cool and expensive prop.

I am a teacher and thought it would be fun to teach my students how to use it. I was very pleased with the quality and the box it came in. Worth the price and I will be able to show them Chinese writing from inside the box. Would make a nice gift.

The case is the best part of this deal. The abacus itself is cheap in every way. Craftsmanship is poor. Grooves that hold the bars are elongated, a 7th grade wood working class could do better. The beads, and the frame have a very poor finish. The dye comes off on my fingers when I use it. I had to wash it several time to get the dye to stop running. This is no 'vintage' abacus. It looks that way in the picture but its not. I wish I had read all the reviews before I bought this one. This should be selling at Walmart for $10.

I purchased this item and feel like I got a great deal! The item arrived in a timely manner and exceeded my expectations. I did not notice the picture of the case-so when the item arrived, I was totally impressed at the intricacy. The instruction manual is very descriptive and provides historical context of the abacus. I'm still reading on the use instructions but imagine they will be intuitive as well. I'm very excited to have found a unique vintage abacus and think it will be interesting to share the mathematics style, once I learn it, with younger children that I know. Thank you!

The abacus predates modern electronic calculators by centuries. If you are skilled enough with one, they can be useful in most situations in which computation of numbers is a necessity. Learning to use one is not necessarily difficult, though you may be spending the rest of your life learning to truly master it. To that end, there a many books that have been written on its use and it would be worth it to buy the book as well, as the instructions are rather limited.

If you have an appreciation of history, elegance, and a willingness to learn, this is well worth the time and money. However, if you are of the "steampunk" persuasion, this may also serve nicely as a center piece on the curio shelf, as it is very well made and very pleasing to look upon. Either way, this is a beautiful piece that fits well within any home.

I ordered a few of these at once. Not a single one looks like the picture here with brown stained wood. Mine were all black painted wood with black beads, so I was very disappointed with the look to begin with. I used them for decorative purposes. There is some type of black soot and oil that rubs off of them as well, and they are poorly made. A friend repaired them for me.
