I find myself coming to the defense of this recording. It is simply better than Mr. Hannibal claims. The sonics are outstanding. He says it sounds like its coming from a potato filter, what ever that is. I find the sound to be pretty remarkable, and I have far from state-of-the-art stereo equipment, though it is good quality hardware.

I will readily admit there isn't a performance on this disc that hasn't been done before, and usually better. That may be the problem here. For the film score devotee, there is simply nothing new here to attract interest. I really don't know what audience Maestro Kunzel and his friends at Telarc are aiming at, but they've been doing it for years, releasing some 90 albums, so they must be on to something.

Maestro Eric Kunzel is one of the great untold stories of American success. He served as music director of both the Cincinnati and Indianapolis Symphony Orchestras. He was guest conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra more than 100 times. He created the Cincinnati Pops, seeing it become the preeminent orchestra in the Cincinnati area, and served as its' music director for an amazing 44 years.

The Cincinnati Pops, conducted by Maestro Kunsel, was the only American orchestra invited to perform at the Beijing Summer Olympics.

As for Mr. Hannibal's assertion that Maestro Kunzel needs new batteries in his pace maker, he may have been prescient. In April 2009, Kunzel was diagnosed with cancer of the pancreas, liver and colon. He underwent treatment, which was unsuccessful. The Maestro performed a final concert at Riverbend on August 1, 2009. The Maestro died on September 1, 2009 at Bar Harbor, Maine, near his beloved home at Swan's Island. He was 74 years of age. That day, the CSO board of trustees posthumously named him "Founder and Conductor Emeritus" of the Pops.

To those of us who knew and loved him, he will be missed.

The SACD version reveals a lush detailed texture to the sound that is not captured by the regular stereo CD. I would not recommend the stereo CD but the SACD version is a different item. If you have the equipment and the ears it is a bit of a sonic delight and well worth a listen.

This is a demonstration quality SACD among the best sounding of any of this orchestra's many recordings on Telarc. The engineers seem to have captured much more of the hall resonance of Cincinnati's excellent Music Hall, the orchestra plays beautifully and Kunzel's alert incisive no-nonsense direction is perfect for these cinematic tid-bits. While I've enjoyed many comprehensive sound track recordings of recent vintage, I find these brief excerpts typically much more enjoyable. This is an excellent diverse program and an outstanding way to show off a multi-channel sound system.

Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have achieved considerable success I'm told with these potpourri albums from films and musicals, but based on this sampling I'd say new batteries for pacemakers are in order for Kunzel and Telarc's well-known engineers.

The sound on this disc appears to emanate from a mashed potato filter and Kunzel's interpretations are pathetic, in no way equaling the original sources from which they were yanked.

What a pity. As a result, we still lack a modern recording of Franz Waxman's wonderful Ride of the Cossacks from "Taras Bulba" to compare with the composer's original performance, and generally speaking, the orchestra plays with little or no discipline on any of these pieces.

Those listeners who like this kind of music are warned to pass this one by...
