I was honestly scared about getting this bag after some of the reviews...but I chose it because it sounded like what I wanted. I have had my bag for awhile now and can not believe how anyone wouldn't adore this bag. First of all, the color is beautiful. The classic olive, army green was portrayed stunningly with this bag. I have used it every day carrying TONS of books and my laptop. It has not put any weight or dug into my shoulder. It is definitely not too big, it is a normal messenger bag size. It doesn't have very many inside pockets which is fine for me because I don't like inside pockets. The water bottle holder is perfect. I have had a lot of messenger bags and this is the first one I have ever liked! Don't listen to any of the other reviews this product is the one you want!!!!!! Trust me!!!!! This might be the greatest product I have gotten from Amazon, and I have gotten a lot! Thanks for reading!

With this bag, i can carry one medium size text book, my 14' laptop and a notebook. It all fits perfectly. It even has a little zipper bag inside to put all your pens, pencils, keys, etc. I dont know what material it is made from but i can tell you it looks like its going to last a lot of time. I recommend this bag for those who need to carry a few things at a time. Remember also that if you overload the bag, your shoulder will start to hurt a big due to all the weight, so you must also take that into consideration.

The reviews on this bag are all over the place and I think I may know why. I own several of these and when they are actually made by Rothco with the Rothco tag they are very thick, excellent quality. However some sellers are providing a bag that looks like the Rothco but is much thinner canvas and not nearly as sturdy. I just received my latest order of three and the two that were sold by "Campers Haven" were the thin canvas, where the one purchased from "Direct Premium Buys" was the nice heavy, well constructed bag. As with all secondary sellers their inventory changes, so this review may become dated. Please note I am posting on 12/18/12.

This bag is frustratingly shapeless. I thought that would be an added bonus for comfort because there's not a lot of structure making it bulky and difficult to maneuver around, but in truth it's significantly larger a hindrance than I expected. The bag, even when full of books, sits like a pile of nondescript fabric. Without much in it, the problem is even worse. Due to the lack of shape in the main body of the bag, the flap appears overly long and doesn't sit correctly.

Another problem is a notable lack of inside compartments. There is only one compartment inside of the bag, with a small, free-hanging zippered pouch sewn in near the top. A small secondary compartment would have been useful, particularly for carrying notebooks and small papers, but instead everything is left to fall around indiscriminately inside the main compartment.

Onto the pros...

The bag looks very nice when it's molded into its proper shape. The quality of the fabric is superb, being both heavy and durable. This is in no way a cheap bag; aside from the design flaws, it is well-made, and will stand up to a lot of abuse. It is, more or less, a messenger bag, one which can suit basic needs. If you just need something to throw an item or two in, this will be perfect.

I bought this bag when I was a junior in high school and now I'm completing my junior year in college and I'm still using it. In engineering, the simplest design is almost always the best, and this bag lives up to that. It's big. It's sturdy. It's simple. It carries a ton of stuff. Great for school, work, walking around town, and carry-on luggage. I can easily carry a 15" laptop with a couple of textbooks and notebooks. Carries more pens and pencils than you can use in a semester. The two cup holders are massive and are also good for carrying your laptop charger if you have a long cable.

Although I'm sure this bag would last another 4 to 6 years I'm going to buy another because I wrote all over this one. But despite a few frayed edges, and some worn out seams, it's still going strong. I recommend lightly washing it every month or two because they get dingy and dusty. Also if keeping it closed tight is an important thing for you, invest in some more velcro patches or sewing a couple of snaps on the cover to keep it shut. Not a big deal to me but some of the other reviews express this concern.

PS: The color will fade but it takes a long time of abuse. It kinda looks nice and distressed now. :)

I have been carrying a Targus laptop backpack around with me for years. Well, let me qualify that a little. I have been carrying that around with me for years while I have been trying other bags.
Honestly, I was perfectly happy with that Targus bag for the longest time, until I got old In the last 4 years or so, I have had some issues with my right shoulder, and slinging that backpack around on that shoulder has occasionally aggravated that. I know what you are saying, why not wear that backback as a backpack? Well, there are a lot of reasons like accessibility and convenience and comfort, along with the face that it makes me look/feel like more of a geek/dork/fat than I am already.

I tried to find a good sling backpack, but they are all either ridiculously expensive, cheaply made, too small or the sling is on the right hand side. Most recently I tried a Solo messenger bag, which worked in form factor, but had it's own issues like the pocket in the flap bulged out nasty when used, the flap closure clip was single in the middle of the bag which made the bag front roll up on the corners, and the pockets just weren't adequate enough for my space needs.

Enter the last try, the Rothco Vintage Classic Army Messenger Heavy Weight Shoulder Bag. This is a messenger-style bag made out of heavy/durable canvas material. It has 2 roomy front pockets big enough for me to carry all my odds and ends including my Kindle, usb drives, mail, my little travel hygene/medial kit, etc. The 2 side/drink pockets are great Normally those kinds of pockets are only 3 or 4 inches of mesh, but these are almost full bag height solid canvas pockets which work fantastic for carrying things like all my assorted cables and my glasses case, etc., and can be secured with snaps at the top. There is one small zippered pocket on the inside that is big enough to carry all your assorted pens and paraphernalia. Lastly the single main interior compartment is quite sizable. Although not padded for laptop carry itself, you could easily fit a 15'+ laptop in there with plenty of room to spare for your chargers, books, papers and probably your lunch too. Also, worth noting is that the bag, even when packed, does not look oddly malformed or too bulky to carry comfortably.

I mentioned previously that this was made of durable heavy canvas. That level of durable construction appears in every aspect of the bag. The stitching is solid, the hardware all the way around is metal and build for hard use. I am quite impressed with the strap itself. It too is made of a wide width heavy canvas, attached directly to the bag and is not removable. Many other messenger bags use cheap plastic clips or thin metal dog clips which invariably bind up on something and detach at the most inopportune moment. An added bonus of the strap being canvas is it does NOT slide off my shoulder

All in all it's a great bag and so far I am quite happy with it. For around $25 you just can't beat the price. I highly recommend this for the rest of you commuters, it gets 2 thumbs up!

I got this bag in black and maybe that was the problem. The dye emits a smell that is beyond horrible and it is such a poor dye that it comes off on everything that touches it. It had such a strong smell that I could not stand being in a room with it. I hoped maybe it would air out in a few days due to it being shipped in a plastic bag...no luck airing it out outside. I searched the web and tried a few remedies to remove the dye's smell. I finally got the smell minimized to the point it did not gag me but the color looked marbleized and faded. But even with all this the dye will still come off on anything it touches. I actually liked the size and thought the make of the bag was durable. I regret that I did not return it and try a light color as soon as I received it and now that I have soaked it, I am stuck with it. Maybe a lighter color would not smell as I see many great reviews and did not see any thing about that horrible smell!! What a disappointment this bag turned out to be! Stay away from the black bag.

After having the bag for about a month, the stitching that holds the strap to the bag has failed. I don't carry much in the bag, usually only a laptop and a notebook. This is a poor sewing job.

Can I get it fixed? Sure I can. Am I annoyed that I have to do it? You better believe it.

I like this bag a lot and it will certainly meet my needs but I have a few issues with it.

Cons.
1. It does not have a handle across the top which means you have to pick it up the the long strap.
2. The Velcro does not quite stick right unless you have a decent amount of stuff in the main interior pocket.

Now on to the much larger pro list.

Pros.
1. While the Velcro may not sit right if not filled enough, it can hold a large amount of stuff. You shouldn't carry your laptop in it without a individual case.
2. The strap is wide enough to be comfortable even with a heavy load.
3. The two side slots are wide enough to fit most bottles, only the ridiculous stuff like the biggest Gatorade bottles won't fit it.
4. The little inside zipper fits all regular pens and could easily hold a phone charger or loose change on top of it.
5. My favorite part of this bag is the interior front pockets. One holds my kindle fire in its small protective case and its charger. The other holds my reasonably sized bible. This was something I desperately wanted so I could dig out my most used stuff without having to dig around in the main pocket.

This product truly deserves a 4.5 but it is not perfect. Good product all in all.
