Editorial Reviews

Review

"Cropper (Pretty Knits) enlisted the assistance of several well-known designers for this collection of vintage-inspired patterns that draws from a variety of eras, from the sophisticated 1940s and 1950s to the relaxed 1960s and 1970s. The book is organized by type of projectâ??clothing, housewares, accessories, and giftsâ??rather than period, so a classic-Hollywood style wrap, a 1970s-style mesh tunic, and a bobbled cloche-and-scarf combo show up in the same chapter. This can be a bit jarring, but it could also help crocheters find designs that may be outside their comfort zone. Directions are provided for each pattern; an appendix covers the specialty stitches used in the patterns. Most of the projects are appropriate for advanced beginners and beyond. And the styling is gorgeousâ??each project has a multipage treatment with fashion-style photos as well as detailed close-ups. VERDICT In the wrong hands, vintage or vintage-style patterns can take a turn for the costumey, but this collection avoids that fate by using the past as inspiration rather than directly imitating it. Fashion-forward crocheters will have fun with these designs." --Library Journal

The sweater shown on the front cover is lovely but everything else in the book is mediocre. I have enough patterns for shawls, scarves, afghans and pillows. I was hoping the book would have more garments.

I’m just a beginner at crochet, but my grandma was definitely an expert. Looking through Vintage Crochet was like taking a walk down memory lane as I saw several items that were very similar to ones she had handcrafted for me as a child. I’m excited to recreate some of them for myself and I started out with the tiny, circular jar covers, which went pretty well, since the directions were really clear and straightforward.

I also really want to try out the roses for the rose blanket, so pretty! There’s lots of designers contributing their ideas, so there’s a wonderful variety. I also liked how Vintage Crochet has a great current spin on oldies with boho and hipster pieces added in there, too!
