4.0 out of 5 stars Not enough original projects, but very good
I liked this book very much - the pictures are well-done and the layout is beautiful. Very high design standards. I only wish there were more creative or new projects - things I have not already seen elsewhere. I have TONS of vintage fabrics, and there are just so many pillows and sack bags I can make (or need for that matter). There's room for another book with more...

3.0 out of 5 stars love of vintage
This book is somewhat interesting if you like looking at pictures, but don't expect too much inspiration if you are a seasoned sewer. And, if you take any decorating magazines you will have seen much better pictures than what is in this book. Definitely not a book you will want to keep for reference, because it is not detailed enough. A lot of outdoor ideas if you like...

A lot of outdoor ideas if you like to use fabrics in that way. Also ideas like: covers for hot water bottles, coffee pots, books, and clothes hangers. Make bags to hold laundry and toys. The rest of the book shows kitchens and bedrooms using towels and spreads with vintage, or vintage "look" fabrics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rethink Your Use of Fabrics, December 18, 2005
This review is from: Vintage Fabric Style: Inspirational Ideas for Using Antique and Retro Fabrics in Your Home (Hardcover)
I needed the ideas in this book to use the vintage lace that I'd collected and the stacks of old quilts hidden away in the closet. These were things that attracted me at flea markets and yard sales, but then I had trouble working them into my decor.
The idea of hanging antique clothing on the wall like a piece of art really appeals.
This is a great book for any fabric-aholic out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars There are ideas for every room of the house, December 8, 2005
This review is from: Vintage Fabric Style: Inspirational Ideas for Using Antique and Retro Fabrics in Your Home (Hardcover)

Lucinda Ganderton and Rose Hammick's Vintage Fabric Style uses gorgeous color photos by Catherine Gratwicke to embellish the authors' discussions of incorporating vintage fabrics into a modern home. There are ideas for every room of the house, plenty of step-by-step projects, and plenty of insights on fabric qualities and project suitability. Bright photos everywhere make for fabulous examples.

I really liked this book for the photography and ideas--IO would have liked it more with more projects and how to directions! It is beautiful, though

2.0 out of 5 stars Very little to offer and poor choices for expanded instructions., July 23, 2008

I wanted to like this book! But if you have craft experience, it's essentially useless. The few sets of instructions include: a drawstring bag, VERY simple apron, a duvet cover made from napkins, a baby quilt, a pillow cover (also patchwork) and handkerchief curtain...hm, more patchwork! You can get much better books on most of those very easily and have more than a double page spread of instructions or a single photo for inspiration. The drawstring bag does have a round bottom with piping but that's as complex as it gets.

There are 'hints' to keep separate scissors for paper and cloth, to wind embroidery floss on cardboard bobbins, and to store your vintage fabrics in a lovely antique cupboard!

So why did I pick this up and bring it home? Somehow I spotted the only 3 things of interest immediately and thought that was a fair representation of the contents. On page 64 there is a baby blue child's shirt cut down from an adult shirt. Handstiched with reverse seams (exposed raw edges). How current, how green! How lovely to find something vintage aimed at a boy child (possibly)! It's not even mentioned in the text, just the info in the photo caption. On page 81 a wool wrap for a french press coffee pot which matches the egg cozies on 78. No mention of fulling (making felt from previously woven wool vs felting which is done with unstructured fiber).

Published in 2003 but what was vintage then is still vintage. Just not a useful book. Thank goodness I can take this back.

A beautiful book with great photos and ideas. There are instructions for a number of projects and an idea section in the back. Good for anyone who loves to look at photos of vintage items for inspiration.
