Review

This new second edition, with over 300 hats never previously published, is intended to be a companion volume to the 1st edition; it completes and compliments the first edition, so that between the two books there's a good representation of styles from all two hundred years, 1770-1970.

About the Author

Susan Langley discovered as a little girl that vintage hats and clothing are links to our past that we can examine and learn from. As a child, she brought her Grandma a "funny" hat she had found in an old trunk, and her grandmother said "Susie, my great-grandmother worse this hat to the train station to see Abraham Lincoln's funeral train when it came through Syracuse in 1865." Thus began Susan Langley's fascination with vintage hats.

This is by far the best book on the market for dating and information on hats and bonnets. Ms. Langely's first book on hats and bonnets is only surpassed by her new revised edition. The photos alone are worth the price. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is just starting their collection because having this book along with you when you shop will save you a lot of money on mistakes! In fact all of her books are of the same caliber and worth the investment.

...Or actually coming forward in time from the late 1770's to modern times. I thought the first edition was wonderful, but this new one includes many more WONDERFUL and GLAMOROUS HATS, along with great information on the times, the style, the milliners! Loved the early fashion plates/photos/advertisements then seeing the actual hats. Fantastic! Would make a great resource for historians, writers of period fiction or anyone who just loves style.

I bought this book on a whim, thinking it would just be a catalogue of grainy pics of crumpled antique hats with some rough price estimates.. I was pleasantly surprised to get a giant, heavy tome full of clear color pics of women's/children's museum-worthy bonnets, hats and caps from early Regency through the 20th century. Lots of descriptions, period info and illustrations accompany the photos. Hats/bonnets go by decade of fashion, with examples of various types and styles, some I'd never seen before.

Really excellent book for a female re-enactor, historian or costumer. Great colors/ideas/info. Recommended!

I purchased this book as a gift for someone who makes vintage costumes (it was in her wishlist). This is a beautiful book. I can't say I know much about the subject, but I was very impressed by the wonderful images. I found myself flipping through the pages, marvelling at the beautiful illustrations and photos. The book is remarkably low-priced for the quality; I've spent a great deal more on similar costume books that do not compare to this one.

I have had Susan Langley's first edition of Vintage Hats and Bonnets for years and have thoroughly enjoyed it. It was my first acquisition when starting this hobby and it is an excellent primer for the new collector. Now two shelves of a bookcase later with every reference book on hats I could find, I still rank her books right up there with the best. I give short talks to groups and really like the way she gives a short history as to current events from that particular decade along with pictures of the hats. The revised edition adds even more pictures of hats and as an avid collector it has been instrumental in being able to date hat purchases for my collection. As always is the case, value pricing can be very subjective and often depends upon geographical area that you are collecting. I love both books and will certainly keep both. Another great reference book with a lot of photographs and information on the designers is: Women's Hats of the 20th Century: For Designers and Collectors
