I have tried to live my life in the kitchen whether cooking for my family, in a restaurant or teaching, adhering to my Grandmother s prime directive Son there s better places to save money than the food you put in your family s belly. If you want beef buy real beef. If you want a tomato buy it when God intended it to grow. And my own personal credo if it says good for you it s probably not, if it says engineered for better health avoid it all costs, and if they have to explain to you why it s not bad for you it most certainly is.
The topics that Jessie address in this book are things that everyone needs to know not should know needs to know. I applaud her; I encourage her... read this book. --Chef Jamie Watson
What you eat affects how you feel. It makes perfect sense, yet why is it so hard to find healthy food? Every time you go to the supermarket with your kids, it s a battle, you vs. all of the influences that your children are subject to from the industrial food complex, and I feel like I am losing the war. Along comes natural wellness professional, Jessie Hawkins to the rescue with her second book, writing it as if the reader is having a conversation with her in clear and empowering language.
Ms. Hawkins provides an historical perspective to how we got in this predicament and provides fuel and tools for us to climb out of it, take control, and take better care of ourselves and our families. This is an invaluable aid for all families concerned about health. Jessie reminds us how easy it is to lose sight of the simple fact that health begins with what we put in our body, and, she tells us, very simply, what we should we eat and why we should eat it. This is an amazing tool to have in my Family Medicine practice and to share with my patients. It should be in everyone's shopping cart. --Daniel B. Kalb, MD, MPH, FAAFP
The Vintage Remedies Guide to Real Food is a fantastic new book that keeps the focus away from what not to eat, and puts the spotlight on what to eat instead. In it, Jessie Hawkins lists the simple steps people can take to bring healthier, more wholesome and nourishing foods into their diet. The reader isn't left feeling empty and confused, as so many 'how to' books can do, but inspired...and full! --Sara Snow, Natural Living Expert/TV Host/Author

not what I really expected,
This review is from: Vintage Remedies Guide to Real Food (Paperback)
I was extremely curious about this book - I was hoping that it would be much more than it turned out to be. I basically goes along the lines of many other books out there, does not stand out as being anything special. I was hoping for more information - it seemed to be talking down to me... I ordered the Vintage Remedies book also, and am very happy with the Remedies book...

Step-by-Step Guide to Eating Real, Healthy Food,
This review is from: Vintage Remedies Guide to Real Food (Paperback)
Real Food is packed with an array of information to help anyone on their journey to healthier eating. Jessie does not come off as preachy. Instead, she gives practical, down-to-earth advice and information. The book is broken down into five main sections: Why We Eat..., What to Eat..., How to Eat..., Let Your Food be Your Medicine, and Resources.
The first section of the book talks about food. It talks about the history of food, the nutrition of food, modern food, and more. It helps readers understand the whys behind food and eating. The second section delves into what real food is and isn't. It guides readers in their quest to really eat healthier, real foods. The third section goes into how to really make the changes. Knowing what we should do and actually doing it are two different things. This section will help readers make the transition to eating real food. The fourth section is my favorite section. In my opinion, this is the real heart and value of the book. (That is not to say that the rest of the book isn't great, but this section is a must read - must keep resource.) In this section, Jessie takes readers through the food journey from Agar Agar to Zucchini. Each food is talked about in detail so readers understand the nutritional value in the food. Most foods have recipes that accompany their entry in the "food journal". The final section contains valuable resources to help readers better understand food. Resources include an appendix about food additives, an appendix about sweeteners, an appendix about natural leavening bread, and a section on future learning (where to learn more about the topics). This is a great book for anyone who is seeking to learn more about the foods that they are eating and who is wanting to start a healthier lifestyle. I received a copy of Real Food from Vintage Remedies as part of MamaBuzz in exchange for an honest review.

I love this book! Very easy reading and lots of practical tips. The recipe section makes applying new foods simple. I continue to make changes in our family's eating habits because of this book, and I see many health benefits because of those changes. Highly recommend.
