Serial - It's not just for kids, August 28, 2007

With ALPHA VIDEO's VINTAGE SERIALS COLLECTION, packaging seems to supersede content. With only two 12 episode serials inside its black laquered wooden case, a more accurate description would be: VINTAGE SERIALS TWIN-PACK. (NOTE: Neither of these are restored. If transfer quality is critical, ALPHA and other public domain purveyors may not be for you!)

THE RETURN OF CHANDU (1934)
A bare-bones 'B' grade serial with a single well-known cast member. Bela Lugosi, just three years removed from worldwide success in UNIVERSAL's "Dracula," had already begun his precipitous slide into moviedom mediocrity. Here Lugosi is the title character, a magician who could disappear at will. (In the first Chandu serial, Lugosi was the villain, "Roxor.") "Chandu" was adapted from a popular radio show of the same name.
THE STORY: An evil cult, located on a lost continent (!) intends to return a beloved goddess to life by sacrificing an Egyptian princess. The girl they've marked for death is a close friend of Chandu the magician, who repeatedly comes to her rescue.

Bela Lugosi co-stars, along with cinema's "Dick Tracy" (Ralph Byrd) in this high powered action yarn about a scientist (Lugosi) who has a gas that can disintegrate almost anything it comes in contact with. Lugosi is pursued (and eventually foiled) in his plot to sell the gas, by Lt. Kent (Byrd) and the Coast Guard.
