Product Description

Editorial Review

Measuring a full 7 feet by 7 feet and containing over 28,000 clues, it's hard to comprehend that a crossword puzzle can get much bigger than this one. Hang this monster on your wall using the included double-sided tape, and then unleash your inner cruciverbalist. The puzzle's challenge lies in its size; you have to consider the big picture, literally. Clues range from easy ("Ludwig ___ Beethoven") to the moderate ("'Whether one is or ___...': Plato"), so it's a great activity for one person, two people, or the whole family. The set includes a clue book, the puzzle grid, an answer grid, and the tape. --Lisa Whipple

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a big project!, December 12, 2004

I just finished the World's Largest Crossword Puzzle last night. It's been one heck of a project--approximately equivalent to 200 slightly oversized daily crossword puzzles. I'm going to love hanging the puzzle on my wall--it really is something to behold when it's all done. But it's also a big undertaking that requires a great deal of patience and perserverance.

The puzzle itself is moderately difficult, but made more so by the fact that somewhere during the revision (it's been re-done once) or perhaps during the original construction some errors were made. Because of this, many of the clues don't match the answers. Add to that the fact that the author uses many hundreds, possibly even thousands, of abbreviations that are specific to a certain field (e.g. "Abbreviation used in electrical engineering") that no lay person ever has a chance of knowing, and you've got what can be an exercise in frustration. You can work for hours on one small section and only later find out that the clue doesn't fit the answer. I'm generally pretty dogged in completing crosswords until letter perfect, but that's not possible here. So I had to sacrifice a bit of my honor and force myself to give up after a couple of passes through the ups and downs. Still, it's about 98+ percent solvable, which is pretty good when you consider how intricate the puzzle is and how hard it must have been to create.

Overall, I enjoyed the process and am pleased with the result. If you've got the time and energy, I highly recommend this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great concept - poor quality, January 28, 2007
This review is from: World's Largest Crossword Puzzle (Toy)
I LOVE crossword puzzles. My quest to purchase this specific one spanned about a year from first seeing it in an airplane magazine to scouting around online. I will finish it, I'm sure, and am glad that I purchased it. However, it is advertised to be printed on nice paper stock, but it is not. The puzzle is printed on 6 separate pieces of 'run-of-the-mill' paper not conducive to hanging on a wall for an extended period of time. Further, the puzzle segments are not printing straight on every piece, so I was forced to crinkle some edged and even sacrifice a column section in order to tape the pieces together. You are also required to fold the edges of the segments so they are flush. All in all, it's a great idea and I love having such a thing in my home. I would recommend, however, purchasing card stock to back it and using precise cutting methods to put it together. So, invest ten or so extra dollars to really make this purchase worthwhile.

we hung it up in our office and no one could go to lunch or leave the office until they solved 1 clue. With 28000 clues, I think we lost a few employees. some guys never left.........
