3.0 out of 5 stars Great Victoria Sponge Cake, but unsure about the rest. October 10, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
When i first got this book, i really loved the way it looked straight away!
I love the little snippets about tea and the fact that it had cakes from my childhood (im originally from the UK).
For about a year ive been searching on and off for the perfect victoria sponge cake. So i tried the one in this book and it turned out wonderfully.
Encouraged, i tried the Welsh Rarebit! Well the instructions were strange because the quantities of cheese seemed a bit much for 4 slices of bread...so i reduced it a bit and it was still SOOOO much left over (and i filled the bread up as much as i could).
I thought it might be a typo.
So i decided to try the Chocolate cake. I followed the recipe even down to the size of the pan (which i dont often do), bought the best chocolate etc...at some point when it was in the oven, i could smell burning!
So i quickly turned down the heat thinking that maybe i had misread the oven temp. No, that was fine. So i put foil over the top of the cake so it wouldnt burn and i let it cook.
When i took it out, it was burn even under the cake and around the sides. I was really disapointed.
I felt like it was a wasted cake. I even tried to cut off the sides and underneath. but the cake is so fragile that it didnt go so well
When i tasted it, to me, it just tasted like the brownies i usually make (with less eggs and fuss), and in all i felt deflated because i had spent so much on ingredients.
So now ive been reluctant to make anything else from here because ive had two glitches with two recipes.
If i make anymore from here i will update, but for now...3 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful May 31, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Although I have not been able to try the recipes yet, I found the book to be delightful, full of wonderful sounding recipes. The color photos are lovely and help create the feeling one is in England and ready for tea. I have many tea books but find this is one that I will go to on many occasions and try new recipes.
