SUPER 8 mm film is silent, you teen age morons!,
By Tim (VA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kiss the Vintage (DVD)
In a age of video people forget that back in the 70's video cameras weighed as much as a house and were B & W for the most part. Bootleg "videos" don't exist of these early KISS shows so all we have are these "Home Movies", taken by early fans. Remember the Zapruder camera which captured Kennedy's assination on film was an 8 mm. This is a record of history, without sound. This DVD is a record of KISSTORY, without music. So my sugestion is to just put on a record, woops sorry, CD, and play this DVD and imagine how it was in the 70's kid. When Rock & Roll was everthing. And home movies were silent. Like you should be!

This DVD Stinks,

Half the DVD is SILENT! Apparently, it's mostly bootleg footage that could not be sold with sound since KISS owns the license to the songs. They don't TELL YOU there's no sound, they just take your money and you find out the hard way. There are a couple of cool old TV clips, but it's mostly blurry fan footage from concerts that's silent. SAVE YOUR MONEY!

This is the earliest movie film of KISS known to exist !!!,

And for that fact alone this DVD is worth it's weight in gold. This film is before the band made it big, they were still playing clubs and unknown for the most part so there look is different.Ace still has the frosting he put in his hair in the early-early days. The uniforms are some of the first the band ever had made for them and are classic leather and studs. If you have a big KISS video collection you can't do without the very first film footage of the band. And here it's available on a DVD format...very impressive. The only bad thing about this DVD is that it only shows "half" of the original film. The second half will soon be available on The Vintage "II" DVD. Look for it later this year and complete this earliest film footage of KISS for your collection. Get The Vintage and The Vintage II and have the entire first film footage ever shot of KISS. I know I will..........

What was the point?,

I don't recommend this video even for KISS fans, of which I am one. There's no music on it at all, and the concert footage is terrible. Don't waste your time or your money.

This is the most "honest" of all Kiss unofficial DVDs. First, because it says exactly what it is (a video fanzine from fans to the fans) and what it isn't (a music video - no Kiss music is heard). And second, because it does contain historical material. Of course, the reason for buying it is the 8mm film from 1974. I don't need to warn you about picture quality. But, knowing the limitations of the Super 8 format (I've used it myself a few times), I must say the results are not bad. Whoever shot the footage was in a privileged position, probably at the soundboard, and got a good view of the stage (unlike the fan who shot four minutes of a 1977 concert and filmed mostly heads and raised fists - this footage is also part of the DVD). It is an excellent and rare sample of early Kiss, including Gene's firebreathing and blood spitting acts. The fillers are also interesting. Apart from the already mentioned 1977 footage, there are snippets of interviews from 1977, 1980 (Gene speaking about Peter Criss's departure) and 1983, and also the unedited "Farewell Tour" Press Conference. Of course, this DVD is for diehards, not for casual fans. But at least it is a bona fide collector's item and not just a random collection of boring interviews, like some other titles you may know.

Great Early KISS Footage!!,

Although silent, the 8mm footage of KISS on this DVD is EXCELLENT! It's hard to find footage this rare or early of KISS. The only thing that would make it better is if there were sound. But even without sound, it's not that hard to tell what songs are being played! An excellent release, thanks to the video company that released it for convincing the owner of the film to allow its release!!

The only reason that this remains in my house is that it's noth worth the trip to the post office to return it. Too much of it is terrible recordings of soundless footage. Who wants to watch concert footage without sound??? All the other KISS videos were great fun to watch, but this is garbage. Well in 20 years I can offer it on E bay. It will be in mint condition, cause it will remain in the case, untouched for at least that long.

KISS VINTAGE REVIEW,

This DVD totally sucked! I can't believe it was released! All the footage is silent and the interviews are brief. It's a cheap bootleg version. (...) I love to see live footage of the band and the Second Coming DVD was great, but this was horrible. I can't believe KISS even knows that this is for sale. It's worth about 50 cents!

I bought this on DVD a while back and I watched once. I just got done watching this after a long time and I think it's actually pretty good. Sure there aren't any music performances but what do you expect from an UNAUTHORIZED movie. There are two clips of footage of early KISS with no sound though. Pretty good.
