A very underrated ISENGARD album,
By
This review is from: Vinterskugge (Dig) (Audio CD)
Fenriz is a dark mastermind and gets to show his fullest potential in any ISENGARD album. While the first 7 songs are no doubt the best, the other songs must be appreciated by true DARKTHRONE fans. Fenriz' voice is almost shriek-for-shriek compared to Nocturnal Culto and guitars are,as always, thrashing.

"Vinterskugge" is a masterpiece. It's a collection of Isengard demos that Fenriz made before he recorded "Høstmørke". The first chapter, "Vandreren"(1993), is the best. This chapter is mostly Folk Metal, and the title-track "Vinterskugge" is the cd's best. The second chapter, "Spectres over Gorgoroth"(1989), is plain death metal, before black metal had really kicked in. This chapter is also cool, and Fenriz pulls of the death growl very well. "Thy Gruesome Death" is a pure destruction piece. Very extreme... The last chapter, "Horisons", is a collection of demos from different time eras. It's not as good as the previous chapter but still very enjoyable stuff. The sound is not even that "necro" on this compilation, considering that it's old demos from the eighties. That is also a plus... You should buy this album, but you should also buy "Høstmørke". HAIL FENRIZ!

Wow Fenriz can sing,
This review is from: Vinterskugge (Dig) (Audio CD)
I never knew Fenriz can do operetic vocals. Anyone looking for a great viking metal album should check this out especially if they are into bands like Enslaved and Emperor. Fenriz actually does some operetic vocal where he kind of sounds like Ihsahn off of the Anthems album. The album is very atmospheric not really thrashy like his main band, Darkthrone. There is alot of synthetic parts, ambient parts, and slow guitar playing. There are even bits of chanting on here. It reminds me of the Hammerheart or Nordland album from Bathory but even colder that's the best I can describe for this album. Anyone who is comming off the rush that was Ihsahn's solo album should get this. It's equal parts funeral doom, viking metal, and black metal.

Nice Black Metal,

I just bought this CD three days ago and I have to say that it's pretty good. Tracks# 3,8-12 are probably the only black metal songs, the rest happen to be a little bit more alternative. I'm not saying that they're bad, it's just, they haven't met the Black Metal Genre. They're actually pretty relaxing, if you want to know the truth. What was surprising was that I got this CD so easily while it's a hard to find. If you're interested you should go get it while you have the chance!
