This is a new transcription for viola and piano by Annette Bartholdy of the Cello Sonata, Op. 40. It was recorded on the Naxos label by Bartholdy on viola and Julius Drake on piano. G. Schirmer has North American territorial rights to most of the works of Shostakovich, which allows Hal Leonard to sell this Boosey & Hawkes publication.

It sounds better on viola!,

I am not a musician, but I recently heard a performance of this sonata based on Bartholdy's transcription and another transcription for viola. My wife and I both agreed that the sound of the viola actually suits this piece better than the cello, and we like it considerably better on the viola.
