Book Description

Colombia has long suffered under such violence that it is now one of the most convulsed societies in the world. Far from being the result of solely the drug trade, the country's contemporary crisis stems from La Violencia ("The Violence"), a period of terror, political banditry and peasant unrest that plagued Colombia between the 1940s and the 1960s. The 14 essays in this collection examine La Violencia and its effects on current conditions, placing today's violence in its historical context. The contributors are specialists in social science, history and related fields, from the United States, Colombia and other countries. They not only examine the roles played by the drug mafia, guerillas and class conflict, but also suggest reforms that will offer a fundamental challenge to Colombian society.

5.0 out of 5 stars Required reading for any serious scholar of Colombia, December 13, 2003

Of the many books on the Colombian conflict out there, this is the best single source on the contemporary crisis that I have encountered. It gives a balanced approach to the conflict that demonstrates its complex sociopolitical and economic elements, without engaging in polemical and biased attacks against either the United States or the Colombian aristocracy (though they both certainly have played their parts). In this conflict, nobody is entirely innocent nor entirely culpable. There is ample information in here for both the expert and the uninitiated. The chapters that I found to be the most illuminating were those of Sanchez, Bejarno, Restrepo, and Bergquist - though every chapter was excellent. All of the book's authors are Colombia's finest social and political theorists, and this provides an excellent springboard for their other works. Highly, highly recommended...
