Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Parker's collection of interviews with U.K. murderers, Life After Life, was a bestseller in his native land, prompting him to do a similar volume in the U.S. He includes conversations with seven individuals who have served their sentences, nine prisoners and five relatives of victims or killers. None of the murderers claims innocence, and the majority seem to have killed on the spur of the moment. Virtually all the female killers had suffered either physical or sexual abuse at the hands of men. The male murderers present a more varied picture, although most came from middle-class families: one is an unrepentant career criminal who has even done contract killings; one a Vietnam vet; one a former lawyer, a triple murderer who acted on impulse each time he killed. Not until the interviews with the loved ones of victims does the emotional impact of murder become affecting. Their recollections are heartrending.

From Booklist

British reporter Parker recorded testimonies from Northern Ireland in May the Lord in His Mercy Be Kind to Belfast and turns to convicted murderers for this gathering of heartfelt recollections in which 16 persons candidly explain the circumstances that preceded their crimes and discuss their lives both before and after them. Proving that murderers are not all ruthless, evil people, the 16 represent social predicaments ranging from abused middle-class wives to immature young men who inadvertently killed their victims during bar fights or neighborhood squabbles. Some, like a man who is now an assistant pastor but took part in a lethal botched robbery as a teen, lead productive lives, whereas those who remain incarcerated consider themselves hardened criminals. By affording us these revealing glimpses into the diverse lives of individuals who never deny their guilt, Parker also gives us compelling reading.
