A refreshing break from no brainer low budget horror, May 18, 2000

This review is from: Violent New Breed [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I will not give any spoilers here, nor will I attempt to tell the involved plot to you. I will simply tell you that I found this to be a very important film for the low budget video community. Director Todd Sheets again proves himself to be a man with style, vision and the guts to actually make a movie like this one. To see this guy come from such humble (and in some cases horrible) beginnings, and to see what he is doing now, is amazing. With Violent New Breed, Mr. Sheets does not hold true to the reservations of the politically correct, or for the politics of film for that matter. And we should all thank him for it. Violent New Breed is about New York in the near future. Demons have invaded the streets with a drug called Rapture (the ultimate high) that has half the human population hooked. I found this social commentary very refreshing and honest, as opposed to other films about addiction where we are asked over and over again to feel sorry for the addict. The drug is used to cloud their minds so the demons can use them as slaves and can use the women as vessels to impregnate and carry more demons, only these are half-breeds - demon and human mixed. Thus creating a "new breed" to control the planet. The US Government knows about it and has set up a task force of sorts with the NYPD that is determined to infiltrate and destroy the breed. Of course things go really wrong and it's up to aband of thrown together strangers to pull together and save the city. This one has some incedible visuals, a fast moving 2 hour story, great music and so many ideas flowing. The film can be disturbing, funny and gross. It also features film vet Rudy Ray Moore (Dolemite) in a great part as a priest that is simply hysterical. In all honesty, this one should be selling great, it should outsell much of that trash that clutters the shelves of Blockbuster, but then again, they always play it safe and this movie NEVER does. I would recommend it to everyone with an open mind and a love for offbeat Horror.

RUDY RAY MOORE takes on HORROR!, April 15, 2000

This review is from: Violent New Breed [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This one surprised me. I have about ten of director Todd Sheets movies, but this one, along with his "The Shivers" really shows what can be done on a zero budget and with talent and determination. And this one even shocked me more when the finale featured Rudy Ray Moore! This was a great surprise! The film is very hard to describe in a short space. It is original, entertaining and fast-paced. The basic story takes place in the not too distant future when a group of demons have come to our world and mated with humans creating a human/demon half breed known as the Breeders, or the New Breed. There is a government task force created to deal with the growing problem and how the demons use a drug, Rapture, to enslave people. The story goes a million places from there, always surprising me. As a matter of fact, Director Sheets shocked me half-way through the film in a way I cannot tell you about, but truly made me love the film that much more. Good effects, good acting and great music and technical aspects also make this one a wiiner - and Rudy Ray Moore taking on the demons made it worth every dime I spent! Someone needs to give this guy a budget quick! Get this movie NOW!

The MOST ORIGINAL video I have rented, February 17, 2001
This review is from: Violent New Breed [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I MUST buy this one. I rented it tonightr based on this site and the reviews here and being a huge fan of the director, I fell in love with this movie. The story is twisting, turning and amazing. The cast is good, the effects (by a HUGE number of effects people!!!) were great and the action never stops. The story is laid out in other reviews and all I have to add is that I am glad they left a bunch of details out of I would be very upset. There is one part where the hero becomes suicidal that peaks with one of the greatest and most disturbing sucker-punches in all horror. I am not blowing smoke here people (I DON"T even smoke anyway!) the scene has that much power. There are other equally shocking parts, each handled with skill and know-how by a very under rated group of people. This movie only affirms my belief that Todd Sheets is the best director in the low budget field. Sure, I didn't care for the real early ones that I bought(I figure that everyone starts someplace), but this director has gotten better on each movie I have seen since I bought Moonchild and shows a real eye for style, and visual flair. This is the best straight to video movie I may have ever got. Now I have to buy it!
