These are 395 nm UV lights. They are about at the end of the spectrum of UV light and moving into white light. The lower the nm the better the UV detection. All 395 to 400nm UV emit too much white or visible light and are close to useless.
375nm and lower are better at detection but harder to find.
A single led UV rated at 375nm will out perform a 51 led rated at 395nm.

I shopped all over for a good black light for hunting scorpions in the dark. This little number puts out a great beam to spot those little buggers in the dark. They glow like you wouldn't believe. This was the very best value of all those I looked at. A friend bought one that cost three times more and is no better

Not sure if its off on the spectrum or if my animals urinate the wrong matter, but it does not show off stains I know should be there.... maybe my carpet eats protein??? I dont know but it did me no good... It is bright and appears true uv blacklight to me not like those fake black light party bulbs everybody used to own. Real like the Florescent type. Yet it still was of no help.

I have used the bar blacklight in the past to find pet stains on my carpet, but in order to use it you had to either stoop over or crawl around on your hands an knees and it had to be pitch dark.

This light is very small and compact, it fits in the palm of your hand. The LED's give it a fairly bright glow and the range is very good. I was able to walk my carpet and find spots while holding the flashlight naturally at my side or using sweeping motion in front of me with some ambient light from outside. No stopping over or crawling.

It was also easy to hold in my mouth allowing me to use both hands to scrub the stain.

As we get rescue animals I find a black light is wonderful for finding ringworm and other problems on your animal so you can treat them fast and not spread it to other pets. this one is small and handy to use plus the price is right

I wanted a black light to see the luminescence in crystals and minerals. I should have paid attention to the review of whO "Shock" (January 8, 2010). He was exactly right that 395 nm UV emits too much white light and is close to useless. Even in complete darkness, this did not work at all.

The product description includes "mineral hunting." This is misleading as I tried this light on all of my minerals and stones and it was completely useless. The quality of this little flashlight is great -- bright light, sturdy construction, and I will take it camping. So, three stars for misleading description about minerals.

I was trying to get something small and inexpensive because it was for my hobby. As usual, you get what you pay for. This may be fine for proteins or scorpion hunting, but for my purposes, I will be looking for 375 nm or lower.

It does work, but the room needs to be totally dark to be able to see the light areas where the urine is.

Followup:

After only a few uses, the coloring on the LED elements is burning off, and it is no longer effective.

I was looking for a small and inexpensive black light to look for pet urine stains. This flashlight had mixed reviews but I decided to try it out anyway. The first night I tried it out it worked great. I easily found the urine stains and much more. It is an excellent product for the price and met my needs so I have no complaints.

I was prepared to be underwhelmed by the performance of this light when I ordered it. My expectations were greatly exceeded as when I gave it the acid (or is that urine) test, those spots fluoresced brightly. I don't quite know what others expected, but if they are expecting fluorescence on the order of an early 70s blacklight poster, of course they'd be disappointed. For finding traces of bodily fluids this light does just fine. Yes, it will be necessary to turn off the lights in the room in which you are looking, but unless this thing put out several watts of light you shouldn't realistically expect to see fluorescence with the lights on. I bought my light to detect fungus infestation, but secondarily I bought it to check for cleanliness of bathrooms. For such purposes this light will perform as well as needed. I intend to try it out for scorpion hunting when my wife and I go to visit her daughter in Yuma AZ next year. I'll bet it passes that test. I can comfortably recommend this fairly decently made light; it should do quite nicely.

This flashlight is small in size but works really well. I purchased this to show where my pets might have or have marked their territory. Even though I cleaned the carpet with an enzyme cleaner, I want to know how well the stain was removed. Using this flashlight, pet stains come alive. The places I cleaned with an enzyme cleaner were just a faint glow. Places where I used a regular cleaner glowed as if I never cleaned the spot. I recommend this flashlight for anyone who has inside pets or if the outside pets ever come inside.
