Book Description

November 1998
This lavish book features breathtaking color photos of the finest violins and bows from makers of every era -- from Stradivari and other Cremona masters to modern high-tech instruments. Detailed essays from international experts cover topics including profiles of the great players and their instruments; techniques of the classic builders; the marketplace of dealers, auction houses, and great collections; and the repertoire for the violin, with suggested classic recordings.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This coffee-table tome is both attractive and unusually informative. Compiled by a team of British musicologists, violinists, and instrument makers, this lavishly illustrated book is comparable to two recent encyclopedic titles: Walter Kolneder's The Amadeus Book of the Violin (LJ 9/15/98) and Yehudi Menuhin's The Violin (LJ 3/1/97). The present volume is not as detailed as Kolneder's, nor does it have the engaging, personal voice of Menuhin's, but it is surprisingly inclusive, particularly the section on instrument making, where dozens of clear, detailed photographs illustrate the text. The book is divided into six sections: the violin itself, including its history and construction; the bow; the virtuosi and various schools of violin playing; violin pedagogy; the violin market; and, finally, violin repertory. A certain subjectivity enters into the section on recommended recordings. The only disappointment is the short shrift given non-Classical and non-Western use of the violin. Nonetheless, this is an excellent resource for professional and amateur musicians alike, to be treasured as much for its beauty as for its wealth of information.ALarry A.
