Herbert von Karajan was a genius of conductors, Henri-Georges Clouzot a genius of film directors. In 1965/67, when the stars were perfectly aligned they collaborated on five classical-music films. Clouzot was called the "French Hitchcock" and there is a psychologically thrilling aspect to the cinematography here. They could be episodes from the Twilight Zone, as we step back into another world of music than the one of today. The five films (not necessarily in sequence) are:
(1) Mozart's Fifth Violin Concerto in January 1966 (according to the laserdisc jacket) or late 1965 (blu-ray booklet, which is more likely correct) at the Rosenhügel in Vienna with the Wiener Symphoniker and soloist Yehudi Menuhin; the film is introduced by an English-language interview that is nearly as long as the concerto. Menuhin beguiles and flatters Karajan, who never takes the bait but always brings the conversation back to practical music matters, and speaks excellent English with a bit of an accent. The concert is elaborately staged on a set oozing with elegance, as for example a full-length mirror in the background that enlarges the space and doubles the POV.
(2) Schumann's Fourth Symphony in November 1965 at the Wien Film Studios with the Wiener Symphoniker, preceded by an ample, 50-minute film of German-language rehearsals at the Rosenhügel (without the candelabras this time).
(3) Beethoven's Fifth Symphony in January 1966 at the Union Film Studio in Berlin with the Berliner Philharmoniker; the existence of an interview can be assumed but is not certain.
