5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Beethoven Performance by a Consummate Artist, December 3, 2009
This review is from: Violin Concerto in D (Audio CD)
This superb performance by Dmitry Sitkovetsky is among the best of any you will likely find amongst the large selection of Beethoven Violin Concerto and Romances available today. A Russian who studied at the Moscow Conservatory and also Julliard, Sitkovsky demonstrates his superior skills in this recording, making the violin almost "speak" and "sing" at the same time. This is silky smooth playing with emotional pathos and feeling throughout the piece. The Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields does a wonderful job of supporting the soloist with first class playing without taking center stage, and the recording itself by EMI is of good quality with strong sonics and low noise and distortion levels (basically inaudible).

This disk demonstrates that you do not need to spend $20 or more to get a first class recoding of both Beethoven's Violin Concerto and the stunningly lovely Romances (1 and 2). Yes, you certainly can, and some of these more expensive recordings are indeed excellent. But here is a first rate performance at a terrific price. Pick one up to enjoy. If you've not heard these pieces before, you'll come away with a greater understanding and appreciation of what Beethoven can be like. Five stars for performance, five stars for recording, and five stars for price.
