5.0 out of 5 stars Decadent Brilliance, December 22, 1999

This review is from: Violin Concertos (Audio CD)
I bought this disc on a whim. A fan of 20th-century music, I had heard enough of Korngold's film music to know that I enjoyed his more-romantic-than-mahler-or-strauss style, when I was in the mood for that kind of thing, and I had heard a fair bit of Weill's "serious" music in the past. I really wanted to hear what he could do with a violin concerto.

I was not prepared for the Krenek. It blew me away. Here is the one essential 20th century violin concerto [well, one of them, anyway]. It is both bitter and swet, strident and romantic. It teeters on the edge of dissonance without abandoning the late-19-century german style. It is brilliance.

In fact, the whole disc is brilliant. The performances are flawless, and the recording is superb. I only hope that, performed as they are here, these works will stimulate a renaissance of 20th century music.

Wonderful interpretation, but I don't understand why they decided to put these works together. The three of them are entartate music (degenerate) but for different reasons, Krenek is quite different, I bought it because of this latter concerto, I have already had the Korngold concerto and I am not a Kurt Weil fan very much.
