Sometimes a recording will reawaken one's interest in a piece of music. This is that kind of recording. I can't count the number of different recordings I own or I've heard of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, but this one grabbed me anew. It invited me to listen to the music as if I were listening to it for the first time, and that same quality occurs each time I hear it. The words that come to mind to describe this performance of the Mendelssohn are "vital", "committed", "compelling" and "heartfelt".

I am very particular about the way I like the Brahms Violin Concerto performed, and Sitkovetsky turned me around. He makes choices that I wouldn't have if I could play the piece, but his playing is so compelling and committed that it made me reconsider my idiosyncratic preferences. First rate!

The stereo sound is demonstration class, or at least very near it.

I did not buy this disc on Amazon, and I see that it is now only available on the marketplace. My first impression of a CD that can only be purchased on the marketplace is that it probably is not worthy of consideration, but this one is a notable exception. You shouldn't hesitate to buy this CD if this is the coupling you seek, or if you just want another perspective on these two great works.
