Editorial Reviews

Product Description

The world's first lullabies were simple songs sung or hummed by parents cradling their infants and rocking them to sleep. After the birth of violinist Rachel Barton Pine's first child in 2011 she could find no existing collection of classical violin lullaby scores or recordings, so she set about gathering sheet music from libraries around the world and recording her own versions with pianist Matthew Hagle. Familiar tunes and new discoveries intertwine in this sweet, timely release celebrating the beauty of new life and parenthood.

Review

What a beautiful recording this is! It fills a real need as well. A mother or father can put this recording on and relax listening to its clear and present sound while feeding and bonding with the baby. This album also gives us a chance to see how composers from different cultures and different eras handled this particular type of composition. . . This is a truly beautiful disc and I think it will have great appeal to our readers. --Fanfare Magazine, Maria Nockin

Violin virtuoso Rachel Barton Pine's exceptional and lovely new CD does not disappoint. It begins with the famous Brahms Lullaby and includes more well-known melodies along with lesser known melodies. All beautiful arrangements! Rachel plays the musical phrases with her usual songful creativity and gorgeous tone. Her high register is simply heavenly.

This CD is perfect for a baby or child, but as an adult I can say I am enjoying it thoroughly and will listen to it a lot! It's very calming.

I've gone back and am listening to Summertime from Porgy and Bess right now. Wow!

Who doesn't like a lullaby? Everybody likes a lullaby. For many of us, it was the first music we ever heard. Lullabies are so popular that almost every classical composer of the last few hundred (nay, perhaps few thousand) years wrote some of them. Violinist Rachel Barton Pine and piano accompanist Matthew Hague have chosen over two dozen examples of the genre for performance on the present disc. The playing is beautiful and the music relaxing, all of it inspirational in its way.

While I admit that I'm not overly fond of albums containing bits and pieces of things, I can easily make an exception with this one. I also admit that the older I get (which is beginning to verge on ancient), the more sentimental I become. Thus, the Brahms Wiegenlied ("Cradle Song"), possibly the most-famous lullaby ever written, that opens the program practically brought tears to my eyes. It's positively lovely, with committed, heartfelt playing from Ms. Pine, whose own child must certainly be lucky to have so talented a mother to play these things for her now and throughout her life. Ms. Pine says that some of these lullabies are part of a bedtime routine for her child, which she sings to the baby every day, often joined by her husband an octave lower. The cover and inlay photos, incidentally, are those of Sylvia Pine, age two weeks.

Bits and pieces notwithstanding, I think I could listen to this stuff all day. Also called berceuse in French and wiegenlied in German, there is more variety in the lullaby or cradlesong than you might suppose. Ms. Pine's collection illustrates the point with as many variations of the theme as possible in a seventy-nine minute album. She describes them as "short and elegant" pieces, and surely they are, most them composed for violin and piano.

It is not only the mastery of Rachel's playing, but the sweet, rich voice of the Guarnari violin and the charm of the chosen music that makes this album so wonderful. I have already recommended it to all my friends.

The acclaimed violin superstar Rachel Barton Pine sings her baby to sleep with the most beautiful melodies of the world, wrapped in the golden swaddling clothes of her violin music. This is a collection of international music in an exquisite setting of violin solo with piano accompaniment by Matthew Hagle, who is perfectly attuned to Ms. Pine's expression and performance.

Ms. Pine "bookends" the collection with Wiegenlieder by Brahms and Reger, forming a musical cradle for the world's new generation. She has selected famous and familiar songs from around the world, every selection showing the artistry and sensitivity for which she is renowned. The listener can enjoy the technical purity of each presentation, or hear as a novice the melodies without any analysis whatsoever.

Ms. Pine's "ex-Soldat" Guarnarius attracts the listener's attention immediately. Pitch is pure and clear, and the richness of the instrument supporting each note envelops the listener. While not a word is recorded, the expression is of singing. "Summertime" is especially poignant, bringing a picture to mind of the joy of each new birth.

Rachel Barton Pine brings to music lovers another touching and enchanting experience; she invites the audience to feel her love for her new daughter through some of the most beautiful music known to the world.

The artistry on this selection is outstanding. The selections chosen were varied and enriching. I especially enjoyed the colorful treatment of Gershwin's "Summertime".

I love non intrusive instrumentals like MEHDI , ENYA and other similar types of relaxing music and this CD was a great addition to my collection. Great for in the car or at home just relaxing with our twin Babies.

Rachel Barton Pine plays a violin like almost no one I've ever heard. Her sweet tones are so lovely, they make me cry with joy. She knows music and feels music, so she plays it with an almost other worldly emotion. I have been a fan of hers for many years, and now I can include her music in my preschool classroom and music classes! I teach PreK three days a week, and we play music at Rest Time; Rachel's Violin Lullabies will be a welcome addition to our rotation! They are just beautiful--not at all insipid or saccharine, as many lullaby collection tend to be. Some are familiar and will be known to the children, but others will introduce them to important composers and musical works. I am very excited to introduce my students to Rachel's music! I highly recommend this CD to anyone who wants a child to know really good music!
