5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book and cd
After many years I picked up the fiddle again. I also picked up the violin primer. Along with jim Tolle's video I am happy to say I am well on my way, though I am no Iassac Stern. His intro teaches proper form. Jim is patient and clear in his teaching, and the book moves along with the cd in well marked form. This is the best book in this genre, as I tried some others...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Enough
Jim Tolles' book is just a snowflake on the tip of the learning iceburg. I used from front to back and I still had to purchase another beginner's book because the Violin Primer wasn't thorogh enough(for me). I wanted to learn to use all four strings. The CD was helpful for tuning. Mr. Tolles should make a part 2,3,4,...

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good primer, November 4, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Violin Primer for Beginners (Paperback)
I bought this book and used it as my sole sorce of information on how to play the violin when I first got a violin. It was successful in this role in that it really does show you, very clearly, enough to get going all by yourself. It has good exercises, some playable tunes and even a little (very useful) music theory. It has a good attitude about learning (it should be fun) and is approachable and friendly. A good way to decide, in the privacy of your own home, if the violin is for you. The included CD was indespensible. I did not get the video.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite Good, November 14, 2003

I've just started taking violin lessons and bought this (plus a couple of other) books/primers. This one is quite good. The instruction is clear for the most part (learning how to hold the violin and the bow and how to begin is quite difficult and I can't imagine doing that from just a book like this - I started taking private lessons 1 time a week and this book has been a good supplement). Of particular use to me was the tuning guide showing which piano keys to use to tune the violin's four strings....other primers similar to this one have been nowhere near as clear in some of the basics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite good, March 3, 2002

The book/cd is quite good though I found the cd a little fast-paced. The good thing is you can always pause and go back. Other than that its a very well-rounded book...it shows you the parts of the violin and how to care for it...tuning is discussed and how to hold the instrument.

It is a very good instructional book to get if you are just beginning to play. If you already know how to play a little or have had some background experience years ago, this book might be a little easy for you...however its still good for a brush-up.

Consider getting the video as well...the book, cd, and video compliment each other very well.

This book is an excellent start for a beginner that is on their own. The book is simple and easy to follow. The CD is also a great help in tuning up. Mr Tolles is an excellent teacher and his methods are easy to follow. I plan to also purchase The Fiddle Primer.

I just can say this book is great for beginner ! I played guitar and have some knowledge in musical theory. When I read this book, I found it's very helpful, and the CD companion kept me in right track when playing tunes.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book with the CD teaches with expert musician Jim Tolles, March 16, 2002
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Violin Primer for Beginners (Paperback)
I like this book on Violin Primer with the CD teaches with expert musician Jim Tolles & you will learn how to play the violin.

The songs I like to play on the violin is Mary had a little lamb, The Alphabet song, Sunday Waltz, When the saints go marching in & Red River Valley.

This is a great book & I loved and a violin is like a mandolin because of the F Wholes & Jim Tolles the author plays the bass, guitar, mandolin, fiddle & banjo.

You can also buy Introduction to Violin video & Fiddle Primer book.

This is a great book & I loved it & I hope everybody enjoys it!
