Bracing Beethoven for violin and piano,
By HB "HB" (Fort Mill, SC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Violin Sonatas Complete (Audio CD)
If you are in the market for an inexpensive set of the 10 Beethoven sonatas, this is a good choice. The two french musicians play these works with tremendous style and very quick tempos. You may find the tempi too fast if you are used to the traditional interpretations of this music, but I found it to be quite refeshing. In a way, these performances are very similar to the new style of Beethoven symphony performances by orchestras using period instruments. However, style alone does not make great recordings. Execution and enthusiasm does and both of those qualities are here in great supply.

I took a chance on this 3 CD recording of Beethoven's ten sonatas for violin and piano, and was pleasantly surprised.Sonatas 1-4 are on disc one, sonatas 5-7 on disc two, and sonatas 8-10 on disc three. Since I haven't heard more than excerpts from the sonatas before, I don't have a lot to compare these with, but my impression is that they are a very fine recording of the Sonatas at a very reasonable price. The liner notes, in French and English, of course, are also very helpful. Highly recommended. Diane Carder Ferndale, WA |
