Editorial Reviews

ZIN! ZIN! ZIN! A VIOLIN (Written by Lloyd Moss, illustrated by Marjorie Priceman, music by Marvin Hamlisch) A lonesome trombone is joined by various instruments, one by one, to form a chamber group of ten.

MUSICAL MAX (Written by Robert Kraus, illustrated by Jose Aruego & Ariane Dewey, narrated by Mary Beth Hurt) Max stops playing music when his neighbors complain about the noise. What will he do instead?

THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER (Illustrated by Peter Spier, sung by Aretha Franklin) Aretha Franklin lends her soulful voice to this moving rendition of our national anthem.

KEEPING HOUSE (Written by Margaret Mahy, illustrated by Wendy Smith) Songwriter Lizzie Firkin would rather sing and dance than do chores. What if people think she s lazy or sloppy?

PATRICK (Written and illustrated by Quentin Blake) When Patrick plays his violin, the most unusual things start to happen; fish can fly, cows can dance, and trees grow cakes!

APT. 3 (Written and illustrated by Ezra Jack Keats, narrated by Charles Turner) Intrigued by the sounds of a harmonica, two brothers set off on a search to find the musician in an old tenement building.

This video contains the following books:

Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin (by Lloyd Moss)
Musical Max (by Robert Kraus)
The Star-Spangled Banner (sung by Aretha Franklin, with a detailed historical explanation afterward)
Keeping House (by Margaret Mahy)
Patrick (by Quentin Blake)
Apt. 3 (by Ezra Jack Keats)

I think this video is great! I'm a music teacher, and I have read the book "Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin" to my first graders, but this version helps them understand what the instruments sound like (same with "Musical Max").

"The Star-Spangled Banner" is great too, because it illustrates what the words actually mean, and it has 3 of the 4 original verses, as well as a very detailed historical explanation that was perfect for my third graders when we had an America-themed concert.

"Keeping House" isn't really about music, but it's a cute little story. I like "Patrick", which is a nonverbal story. The title character plays classical music on his violin, which I am a big fan of. "Apt. 3" is a great story as well, I'm a big fan of Ezra Jack Keats.

I highly recommend this DVD. It's my first read-along DVD I've ever experienced, but I will be getting a lot more!

The title story Zin! Zin! A Violin is reason enough to buy the video. It's told and orchestrated in a way that can't be duplicated by just reading the book. The other stories are also wonderful and kept my students highly entertained. Perfect for the music class.

This will work quite well in my various aged classrooms. I enjoy having the books on a DVD to review as well. Thank you.
