Set in fourteenth century Italy, the story is about the enmity between two princes, Visconti, the evil Duke of Milan and Mastino della Scala, the dispossessed Duke of Verona. The hatred of these two men is the haut basis of the plot, but the lyrical descriptions of Milan and the countryside and the almost unbelievable cruelty and black heartedness of the unscrupulous Visconti, help to make the impact of this story a really tremendous one.

A good dark historical romance (adventure),

As a lover of Dumas style historical romance I have searched for other authors who could provide me with that kind of high adventure in a historical setting. My search brought me to this book. Bowen give us a dark story of the Visconti taking various cities in pre/early (I'm a poor scholar)-renasance Italy. A true villain Visconti forces the main character to choose between his honor and love. What whould you choose.
