Bought this system to warm up my car before getting in during the winter. First of all, the command to start my vehicle works MAYBE 50% of the time. Secondly, there is no confirmation on whether your vehicle received the command or not, so generally, I trudge through the snow only to be surprised to find my truck still icy and unstarted. I've had to resort to using the keychain remote starter (instead of my iPhone) which completely negates the purpose of this overpriced piece of garbage. AVOID at all costs.

Just wanted to update my review....since my initial review above, Viper has released a new version of the software which now sends a confirmation back to you if your vehicle has received the command. This is night and day difference as compared to the old software. I would not hesitate to recommend thie Viper SmartStart system to anyone and am changing my review to 4 stars. (Minus 1 star for cost).

I bought the Viper VSS-4000 with high hopes last fall (November 2012). I purchased and paid for install at a local, big-box retailer here in Columbus, Ohio. I bought this package (4000) because I figured that having a cheap 1-way remote is a good back-up in case my iPhone died or I didn't have cell service or my car was parked in a dead zone. The one thing that I didn't consider were the claimed "network issues" (but I think a Viper issue, not cell provider).

Quick background - I already have the Viper 5901 installed without Smartstart on my wife's car... No issues there, and we've been very satisfied.

After my VSS-4000 smartstart unit was installed, I noticed that it took anywhere from 12-30 seconds for a command (remote start, lock, unlock) to be sent, received by the car, and for me to get the success confirmation on my iPhone. This was a little annoying, but I thought it would be something with which I could deal for the convenience it offered. What I did not realize is that I would have intermittent success and failures with my vehicle within that first week.

Now I've heard that smartstart uses AT&T's wireless network which is interesting because I have AT&T cell service on my phone, I live in the city limits of Columbus (very good reception), and yet for some reason, I never have such problems with my SMS (actual text messages, we're NOT talking about iMessage, just the SMS).

What I did notice was consistent failures from early AM hours until mid-morning hours (~5am to about 9am) where you can basically count on the car start command to fail.

This is by far the worst experience I've had with a product since shopping on the internet. I had such high hopes that such a large company would deliver me routine good service. I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT THE SELLER; I'M TALKING ABOUT THE COMPANY WHO MANUFACTURES THE PRODUCT DIRECTED.
Where should I start, first of all they demand that you have a professional install your product and that you purchase your product from a " licensed distributor," supposedly to keep "prices fair." That means if you buy from an online source (no matter how they are highly rated) they will not stand by your warranty. What a load of crap! The good news is that most companies will warrant your online purchase. Yet calling them would be a waste of time in more ways than one.
Secondly, I decided to UPGRADE my security system by purchasing their GPS module call SMARTSTART. Which is not only a $250 add one, but also cost another $70 for a yearly membership. In this membership you are being (supposedly) given the security of being able to check your vehicles whereabouts, (far from) immediately text if your car alarm is triggered, text if your car is passed a certain area, or just able to set your alarm, remote start or panic button from anywhere you have a phone signal, not to mention roadside assistance. THE SMARTSTART SYSTEM WORKS WHEN IT WANTS TO. I HAVE BEEN LOCKED OUT A FEW TIMES BECAUSE THIS FEATURE FAILED TO WORK. I EVEN SPENT MONEY TO HAVE ANOTHER LICENSED PROFESSIONAL CHECK THE WORK OF THE ORIGINAL PROFESSIONAL WHO DID MY INSTALL AND HE FOUND NO FLAW IN IT. THAT COST ME $40. I PURCHASED MY YEARLY MEMBERSHIP ON 9/27/2012. This is important please continue reading, please.
Along with your membership you supposedly have a year of (supposedly) safe reassuring road side assistance.

This SOUNDED like such an awesome idea. No keyfob to carry, unlimited range...price was a bit more than a traditional remote start, and annual service fees, but that seemed ok for the benefits.

Except that it only works about 25% of the time. It's not that you think the car is started, but it's not, it's very good about telling you when the start command is received by the car or not...it's just that it fails to send the command. My experience is no amount of retrying is going to make it work either, I've spent 30+ minutes hitting the button over and over (takes about a minute to timeout) and never had success. Either it works, or it's not going to work. The installer shop suggested I add on an antenna and keyfob remote since the cellphone interface is so unreliable. So I can pay MORE, and get less functionality...awesome.

I've seen other reports of people claiming they were told they've oversold capacity and can't keep up...but last I checked, they're STILL selling units and taking money, so I can't imagine things getting any better.

EDIT 2/24/12
Wanted to update this earlier one star review because it's no longer accurate.

Viper has addressed whatever network issues they were having and now reliability is excellent for me. I still get "failure to connect" maybe 5% of the time, but a retry usually works.

One oddity, the "failure to connects" were at the 100% mark a few months ago, and when I gave up and contacted support, they sent me a link to download a special version of the app for my phone (EVO 4G) and all problems went away. Viper support has actually been pretty good.

All that being said, I'm updating my review to 4 stars. It's an excellent system when it works, and currently it's working great.
