Book Description

May 15, 2001 0813825911 978-0813825915 2
The second edition of this text, like the first, is a study guide and reference for individuals involved in the diagnosis, arrangement and control of viral diseases as they occur in cattle in the production-management systems prevalent in North America. The fact, theories and controversies about bovine viral diseases are presented in a format useful to those first exploring the subject and those desiring a review or update. Conclusions and generalizations are derived from both clinical observations and research. Dr. Kahrs has revised and updated the existing chapters and included new sections on bovine caliciviruses, bovine spongeform encephalopathy, bovine immunodeficiency virus, disinfectants and disinfection, viral transmissioin via germplasn and the effects of bovine viruses on international trade.

More About the Author

Bob Kahrs grew up on Long Island and attended Malverne High School where he played football and basketball and ran on the track team. He spent his summers working on dairy farms in Connecticut, Pennsylvania and upstate New York and spent one summer as a migrant farm worker. While still a verterinary student, he married his college sweetheart, Evelyn Payne Kahrs. They have four children and six grandchildren.
After six years of college he received the DVM degree from the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University and entered the veterinary profession.
He spent a year in a mixed practice in Interlaken, NY and six years in his own practice in Attica, NY. He then spent 16 years teaching veterinary medicine at Cornell where he served on the Admissions Committee for 8 years and served as its chairman for 4 years. While there, he learned the trials and tribulations of candidates for admission and the challenges facing admissions committees.
In 1977 he became a department chairman at the University of Florida and gained new insights into the challenges facing veterinary medical education. In 1982 he became Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri and learned about university administration and politics.
After 10 years at Missouri he worked for the USDA for 7 years, negotiating import and export requirements for animals and animal products. Later, he served as the part-time Coordinator of International Affairs for The Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges.
Throughout his career, he was expected to write. Initially, he detested this chore. Because he had waded through ponderous manuscripts and textbooks in search of clear messages, he worked to achieve writing clarity and reader comfort and eventually came to enjoy writing.
He first published Viral Diseases of Cattle and Global Livestock Health Policy. Later to share his writing experiences he published Mastering Scientific Writing and The Highway to Writing Success. Then to help potential veterinary students, he wrote So You Want to Be a Veterinarian.
