Book Description

What is it like to become an overnight viral video star? Sixteen-year-olds become moguls and moguls fetch coffee in the dark comedy suspense thriller VIRAL - The Story of the Milkshake Girl.

Teen foster girl Erika Moradi stands up for herself by swatting the milkshake out of the hand of a sexist school bully and becomes famous in a fluke video as "The Milkshake Girl." She unwittingly incites the wrath of her high school and the darker elements of online teen networks. Her home is vandalized and her life is threatened forcing her to run away.

Producer Jack Hawkins loses his job at a network soap opera. He sinks into depression and resorts to living in his car. His only hope: he has several high concept series ideas involving some of the hottest viral stars of the moment (a goat that trampolines, a closeted gay Congressman, a Brazilian who fell into a ditch) of which Erika is the most notorious.

Media mogul Wilson LeCord seeks revenge after an ugly divorce and a makeover of his empire to succeed in the digital age. He posts a sex video of his cheating ex-wife with a marine where she shouts "Take me to your tree, Bigfoot!" and worse. He joins forces with his felon son (a sociopath in an ankle monitor), washed-up TV producer Jack, and viral sensation Erika to forge an online media news hub called "Viral Video Outlaws."

As death threats mount, Erika's star rises with a music video anthem against bullying called "Bully Bully." She records the song with high school gay outcast Syd. Lady Gaga's guest appearance rockets the video into the viral stratosphere.

Soon, Wilson is no longer head honcho, Jack becomes his own content, and Erika learns the hard way that there is a terrible price to pay when your videos and your fame go VIRAL.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Viral" A Fast Paced Novel About YouTube Nation November 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This novel comes out of the starting gate fast and furious! Erika is a fascinating, mercurial girl,a bullied teenager whose life explodes when her video goes viral and she is known as "The Milkshake Girl". In the blink of an eye, Erika becomes a media mogul. "Viral" takes us inside the mysterious world of YouTube fame and how it makes instant stars--sometimes with disastrous results.

There are a number of intertwining subplots. Player keeps them all in place leading to the climax. Characters include a publishing magnate losing his empire; his vengeful ex-wife; a washed-up producer who wants to produce a viral video reality show; and all of the people you see on YouTube exposing their innermost thoughts, or being shot with cannons of pancake batter.

I read "Viral" in two sittings. It sucked me into its twisted show biz/Internet world, with a great mixture of suspense and laugh-out-loud humor. There is also an unexpected streak of compassion for the characters which keeps them from being caricatures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Story of a Little Known World July 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
For all the YouTube and other videos out there, the entire world of seemingly insignificant videos that suddenly go viral was mysterious to me before reading Mike Player's insightful and fascinating "Viral: The Story of The Milkshake Girl." I generally don't care to read about the lives of teenage girls (thought, admittedly, I'm a fan of "Glee"), but this story had me hooked from the start. The writing is clean and crisp; the story is easy to follow; tension is maintained throughout; and the characters are interesting and easy to care about. While I don't think the author is commenting on what causes this "viral" phenomenon in our culture, it's hard not to think about the "big picture" here and draw your own conclusions. A truly enjoyable read from start to finish which I recommend without reservation!
