My kitty loved it,

This review is from: Viralys (L-Lysine) Oral Gel For Cats, 5 oz (Misc.)
When my cat started having eye discharge, the vet said it was an outbreak of the herpes virus. She prescribed VET Viralys (along with erythromycin opthalmic ointment). I gave Viralys to my cat three times a day for a week. She loved the taste and happily licked it off my finger. After a week, the problem cleared up and has not returned. Highly recommended.

Great Supplement!,

Buying this product here instead of at the vet's office saved me a lot of money, and a 30 minute trip up to the next town north of my own. This product is very effective at helping my cats' immune systems overcome the negative effects of herpes, and keeps their sneezing and eye discharge down to a minimum. They both like the taste, and are very good about taking this supplement.

Pretty good for treating feline herpes,
This review is from: Viralys (L-Lysine) Oral Gel For Cats, 5 oz (Misc.)
This gel would be ideal if it were a little thicker and not quite so expensive. I have three cats who all have the feline herpes virus, and I used to use another product and would just put it on their feet and they lick it off, but the manufacturer changed that formulation so I tried Viralys gel. Like I said, if they made it thicker, I could easily slather it on my cats and dispense it to them that way. It's good that this gel is transparent--that way it doesn't stain the carpet if they shake it off. I put a quarter-sized dab on their hindquarters and then they lick it. I recently purchased the L-Lysine powder, for humans (it's a quarter the price of the pet variety) and sprinkle it on their wet food. The downside of using this is that now the cats don't like dry food, and I hate wet food--it's smelly, messy and gives them bad breath. Well, they have to have Lysine somehow so sacrifices have to be made. Again, this gel is pretty good, but too expensive if you have more than one cat and they need to be dosed twice a day.

Not as effective as human-grade lysine,

I have two cats that carry the herpes virus and have been giving them 500 mg lysine (human-grade) for years. I give 250 mg twice a day which adds up to 500 mg per day. It is critical that my boy get the full dose or his symptoms will emerge. After several days on this product (I tried both gel and powder form), his symptoms emerged. I had been giving him either 1/4 of a heaping teaspoon of the gel and/or a generous scoop of the powder twice a day. These amounts should have added up to just over 500 mg/day. --I suspect they weren't. I think the distribution of the drug in the carrying substance may be uneven or inadequate. When the herpes symptoms emerged, I put him back on human-grade lysine and his symptoms abated.
I will not use this product, and cannot recommend it. I think it is better to buy human-grade lysine and mix it in food or pop it in the cat's mouth (just before eating so the pill does not stay in the esophagus and irritate it). If one is not feeding the cat, one might flush with 4 to 6 ml water to prevent throat irritation and ensure the pill is washed into the stomach. The seller agreed to allow me to return it, but said I would have to pay for shipping. I didn't like that. Amazon gave me a $10 credit toward a future purchase because of my dissatisfaction. I also contacted the manufacturer to let them know that there may be an issue with the amount of drug in their product. I did that today and have yet to hear back. I will update this when I do hear from them.

Great for cats with upper respiratory problems,

My 1 yr old Persian cat has had problems with sneezing and a snotty nose since he was a small kitten. After a few unsuccessful rounds of antibiotics, my vet recommended a Lysine supplement.
The Viralys is easy to give; I just squirt it into a 3 cc syringe and then squirt it in his mouth to give him the exact amount. He doesn't seem to mind it. He still sneezes occasionally, but the yellow snot is gone. I saw results within about 4 days of him taking this product twice a day.

My vet recommended this product for my cat who has chronic FHV. Her nose was always congested, her eyes running, and she used to sneeze constantly. This really cleared up the symptons within a few days. She suggested half dose, or once a day, would be enough for my cat once the symptoms were gone. That helps with the cost, and seems to work as well as the full dose. My biggest surprise is that my cat LOVES it! I just squeeze a small amount on a dish and she licks it right up. So easy, and well worth the expense. Medi-Vet Animal Health has the best prices on Amazon for this product.

Lysine gel,

This review is from: Viralys (L-Lysine) Oral Gel For Cats, 5 oz (Misc.)
It works, I suppose if you can get your cats to eat it. However, the gel is much too thin--it leaks out of the tube, and my cats fling it all over if I try to smear it on their coat. They won't eat it when I add it to their food. They much preferred the old formulation, which is no longer available, I guess.

I have a kitten that had discharge coming from her eyes and nose, and was sneezing often. My vet suggested I try Viralys, and showed me at her office how much I should use and how to administer it. We both noticed that my kitten was not pleased but decided I would try it given the vet's experience with the product. Unfortunately, it has been very difficult to administer to my cat. She does not like the taste, even when mixed with wet food (she leaves it alone). I tried putting some on her paws but once she tasted it, she left it alone. My older cat does not like the taste either. Had I known that my kitten would be so sensitive to this taste that she didn't like, I would have opted to pulverize lysine pills and sprinkle them on her food instead of spending much more on a messy gel she does not like.

My cats will eat this if mixed into their wet food,

I feed my cats Weruva cat food -- which they LOVE. When I first started using this gel product, I tried to get my cats to lick it up like they do when I give them petromalt for hair balls. They wouldn't have anything to do with it. Then I mixed it into their wet food, and although they sniffed it suspiciously, they finally ate it. It can be messy to use -- it is easy to squeeze out too much, so you have to waste some of the product wiping the excess off the cap. I just started using it, so I can't yet comment on its effectiveness. If it turns out to be effective, when I run out I think I'll spend a little more and buy the paste formula. You can get it in a pump that dispenses a measured dose which will hopefully eliminate the use of a measuring spoon and over dispensing of product.

Works but Treat Version Now Available,
By
This review is from: Viralys (L-Lysine) Oral Gel For Cats, 5 oz (Misc.)
This product works but our kitten didn't like it at all and we ended up having to squirt it into her mouth with a syringe. Not really something you want to do for a daily maintenance dose.
Recently treat (chewable and hard) versions of this product have come on the market and I highly recommend trying those. Makes dosage easier and the cat loves them. She now makes sure we don't miss any of her daily doses. Check with your vet if one of these products will work instead: Vetri-Lysine Plus Soft Chews 4.23oz Enisl-F Lysine treats 6.35oz |
