Book Description

December 1, 1998
Virgil, doubtless the most famous of Roman poets, has fired the imagination of generations of writers, poets, and readers. His work has been invented, reinvented, and triumphantly adapted by some of the greatest poets throughout the tragic course of Western history--from Dante to Chaucer to Milton--and Virgil has become the classic poet for two thousand years.

In this biography, the eminent classicist Peter Levi uses Virgil's poems, like the Eclogues, Georgics, his epic, The Aeneid, as well as his historical and archeological evidence, to discard many of the myths surrounding Virgil's life. In doing so, he uncovers the life of a poet whose powerful imagination and ethereal ability helped shape the epic vision of modern man. Indeed, Virgil's densely written and beautifully complex verse dominated Augustan Rome, the period of unprecedented prosperity, peace, and expansion that inaugurated the Golden Age of Roman poetry. Virgil, in fact, was the one poet who most fully understood the Roman Empire's enduring legacy and through his poetry defined the idea of civilization for generations to come.

Although contemporary critics and readers often overlook Virgil's genius, Levi demonstrates that to neglect Virgil is to truncate many of the literary foundations of our culture. Here, then, Levi presents the most searching reassessment of the Roman genius since T.S. Eliot's Virgil and the Christian World in 1946.

Insightful and poignant, Virgil is a remarkable biography of a poet who has single-handedly exerted an influence on Western culture rivaled only by the teachings of Christianity.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Born on October 15, 70 B.C., in a small village near Mantua in Northern Italy, Publius Vergilius Maro, or Virgil, grew up to be hailed as the greatest Roman poet. And although his work has influenced Western literature for two millennia, little is know about the man himself. In Virgil: His Life and Times, Professor Peter Levi reconstructs the poet's life by examining archaeological and historical evidence from Augustan Rome, as well as through close readings of the poet's own work. "Virgil is an intensely personal poet, yet he is anonymous.... My aim is not so ambitious as to try and restore his prestige single-handed. It has simply been to try to understand him in his original context." Professor Levi does an admirable job off adding flesh to the dusty bones of Virgil, pulling away many of the myths that surround his life and letting the genius of his imagination shine through. Although perhaps not a good book for anyone not already acquainted with Virgil, Levi's new book shines with an unabashed love of his subject and will be a welcome addition to the library of anyone who has ever been swept away by the pathos and power of the Aeneid.

From Publishers Weekly

Author of several books on natural history, including The Wolf Almanac, Busch returns with an account of the time he spent photographing grizzly bears in a pristine valley in British Columbia. (He uses pseudonyms for place names in order to protect the area from hunters.) For four years, Busch woke up at five in the morning, drove two hours along old logging roads and hiked three hours through brush to the two blinds he had built near the bend of a salmon-filled river. There he lay in wait with his cameras for the wildlife of the valley?cougars, wolverines, lynx, caribou, marten, blue herons?to appear around him. Busch saw many grizzlies gather salmon from the river, and his book provides ample information on the habits and history of these enormous animals. Unfortunately, his writing lacks the richness and complexity necessary to smoothly blend his memoirs (he spends many sections recalling his own history and attraction to nature) and his research. Even more disappointing are Busch's photographs: the most beautiful among them, and these are gorgeous, are of birds, trees and landscapes, not bears. Nonetheless, Busch's light, conversational tone makes for a pleasant, if not particularly compelling, account. 109 color photos.

This review is from: Virgil; His Life And Times (Hardcover)
Here is a book that details the life and works Rome's greatest poet, Publius Vergilius Maro, known to contemporary readers as Virgil. The name of Virgil (or Vergil, as different spellings may have it)is taken from his clan (Vergilius), just as Caesar was known as Julius [his full name was Gaius Julius Caesar, the middle name always indicative of a Roman's clan].

Peter Levi offers for us an overview of his life, but the balance of this book consists of an exegesis of his works. There is also the occasional nexus that Levi makes between passages in his works (ECLOGUES, GEORGICS and AENEID) and what was happening in Roman history during the epoch that the poet penned the works. Given that not a whole lot is really known about the details of Virgil's life, this is not altogether surprising. Nevertheless, it's still not your typical fare of what one expects when it comes to a person's biography.

It becomes readily apparent while reading this work that it is geared more towards the graduate student than the layman. I thought I knew a lot about Virgil and his sundry inspirations. I was wrong. Most people are aware of the standard poets who drew Virgils' admiration, such as Homer, the Greek tragedians and Catallus. Levi proceeds to reference a host of additional, much more obscure personages who were models of Virgil's craft.

For example, I had only vaguely heard of the poet Ennius prior to reading this book, and had no idea what a major factor he was in the writing of the AENEID. Thanks to Levi, I now possess a better understanding of just how pivotal Ennius was in the life of Virgil. Due to these incessant references of less-well-known artists, those who have a credible understanding of the ancient Latin literary canon will gain much more from this book than those who do not.

This text is highly recommended for those who wish to learn more about one of the most remarkable, distinguished and beloved poets of all time. The book is a virtual must for those who are studying Virgil in the academic arena. I only wish I had had this book when I was attempting to decipher the ECLOGUES while I was in college. Levi's insights and explanations are priceless.
