Book Description

Praise for Elle Lothlorien’s VIRGIN:

"Mixing religious mysticism and scientific intrigue, VIRGIN marks the debut of an amazing new talent. Lightning paced, yet packed with fully realized characters, the action steamrolls to a shocker of an ending. Sexy, bloody, searing, here is a literary thriller that stirs the mind as much it raises blood pressure."
-James Rollins, New York Times bestseller of MAP OF BONES and BLACK ORDER

"Compulsively readable, intriguing, and original. Elle Lothorien's VIRGIN is a sizzling thriller, expertly researched and compellingly told."
-John Case, New York Times bestseller of THE GENESIS CODE and THE SYNDROME

"Elle Lothlorien weaves ripped-from-the-headlines thrills with ancient religious hatreds and love into the most explosive novel of the year. Do not miss this gem!"
-Shane Gericke, best-selling author of BLOWN AWAY and TORN APART

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

"For I dare not say—though I have my suspicions, I keep silent. Perhaps, just as her death is not to be found, so I may have found some traces of the holy and blessed Virgin." -Epiphanius, Bishop of Salamis, 377 A.D.

In Mexico City, cult researcher Paul Savannah is doing what he does best: fueling controversy and drawing media attention at a lecture for his new, wildly speculative book on the Virgin Mary and the Catholic Church. What he doesn’t know is that he’s accidentally stumbled on the truth of one of the Church's greatest secrets and biggest hoaxes.

In Denver, Colorado, DNA expert Kendra Kelvin tries to make sense of the impossible: a DNA profile that matches more than a dozen other women, each of them possessing a genetic mutation called the "parthenos gene,” and all of them mysteriously murdered—except one.

Unbeknownst to either of them, a religious war over a woman has raged in secret, hidden from the eyes of the world, for millennia. And what they don’t know could get them killed. Forced to fight for their lives in a battle not of their making, Paul and Kendra become unwitting players in the search for the Virgin as a mysterious prophecy from the Book of Revelation unfolds before their eyes.

Because the Virgin Birth was just the beginning…

Although the evil-subversive-church-Thriller has been done before - and I did enjoy that ride years ago - author Lothlorien took me down a very different, and very intriguing path in VIRGIN. The author's romantic-comedies snagged me as a reader first, with her humor and unique, excellent writing; so as a fan I followed her to the world of VIRGIN.

I wasn't disappointed. The story doesn't let up action-wise and the complex plot kept me reading in a near-obsessive way. It drew me in with the danger and twists, and had me shaking my head in a 'didn't see that coming but should've...maybe...huh!' kind of way. The complex plot required me to actually focus. But the characters are more deeply crafted than most Thrillers, with even the villains walking me into that uncomfortable, guilty place between despising them and feeling a strange sort of empathy.

I liked that the "scientific" elements, whether based on reality or no, kept me dancing that fine line between skepticism and believing that - who knows? - perhaps what we think we "know" about familiar religious subjects is drawn into question; I liked that VIRGIN made me ponder the possibilities, ones that had never occurred to me before.

Skillfully crafted and well-characterized even to the very last line, VIRGIN is among the best of the new Thriller escapes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Far from her best, and sorry to say this April 11, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I guess I'm the odd person out, but I was disappointed in this book. I'm a huge Lothlorien fan, have read all her work, see that this is actually her first novel and wish she had given it a going over. First off it was way too long, it really needed editing and updating, the grammatical errors were strange ..... Several sentences began "me and Susan are going to... or me and someone else, etc." This is rather bizarre for a writer of her talent, and the editing errors were constant and greatly increased as the book reached the 2/3 mark. Every page was rife with them. I enjoy adventure and mystery, read Dan Brown. John Sandford, Linda Fairstein, Spencer Fleming, Harlan Coban, and many others on a regular basis , but found the seemingly never ending blood baths unnecessary to the plot, and, in one case involving a baby, horrific. The point of the crazy evilness of the villains was very clear early on and a bit of finesse would have been welcome. The ending was definitely not a surprise, though two of the characters hooking up was, and felt unnecessarily tacked on. Having said all of this I am still looking forward to her next novels as she really is one of my favorite authors.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story line - some errors December 12, 2012
By Steve
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Elle Lothlorien produced a thriller well worth reading with a well thought out plot and well developed characters. It moved very fast and kept me on edge nearly to the end, which was a little weak. The only drawbacks were multiple formatting errors, a couple of substantive errors, and some grammatical errors.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read April 20, 2013

The book takes a piece of history and puts a unique spin on it. No matter what you believe, this one will leave you thinking "what if..."

There are a few misspellings and editing errors, but they don't take away from the quality of the story.

Elle does a fabulous job of pulling readers in with developed characters and gripping plot lines. This book was enthralling and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time! Can't wait for more stories like this from her! One of the best conspiracy theories to come out of the Catholic church yet!

More About the Author

Elle's first self-published romantic comedy, The Frog Prince, became an Amazon bestseller in December 2010--a distinction it kept through the summer of 2012, when it peaked at #1 on Amazon's Top 100 List for Humor ahead of both Tina Fey and Janet Evanovich. She was one of the first authors to sign on to Amazon's KDP Select and to take advantage of that program's "free promo days," which she used on Valentine's Day 2012 to give away 45,000 copies of her novels, catapulting her second novel, Sleeping Beauty, to Amazon's bestseller list.

Elle's appearance on the Digital Book World's (DBW) Successful Self-Published Authors panel in January 2012 alongside New York Times bestsellers Bob Mayer and Bella Andre was noted in Publishers Weekly. In February 2012, she was named to Expert Messaging Group's "25 Self-Published Authors to Watch." She is considered a "reluctant expert" on the topic of electronic, independent-publishing (self-publishing), and consumer purchasing psychology, and she is well-known for taking advantage of her full creative control by pushing the envelope--and advising other independently published authors to do the same.

In March of 2012, she published an alternate ending version of her novel Sleeping Beauty called Sleeping Beauty Wakes Up! in response to fan feedback. That same month, she gave a two-hour self-publishing workshop at Left Coast Crime to a standing room-only crowd of (mostly) traditionally published authors.

In May 2012, Elle was invited to become an Expert Publishing blogger for Digital Book World, a industry blog with 20,000 subscribers. She almost immediately created a firestorm of controversy by suggesting that authors should respond to negative reader reviews, a blog that was named one of the "Top 10 Digital Publishing Stories of 2012."

Elle was a featured Author Speaker at the DBW Discoverability and Marketing Conference in New York City in September 2012 alongside John Fine from Amazon and Sasha Norkin from Barnes & Noble and Patrick Brown from GoodReads. She has been interviewed for articles on self-publishing for TIME Magazine and Writers Digest. Her interviews have appeared on USA Today's Happy Ever After blog and GoodEReader. She's appeared on the Trash Talk Show with Barb Tobias, Your Book Is Your Hook with Jennifer Wilkov, as well as Denver's 9News.

Her fourth contemporary romance, Alice in Wonderland, was released in November 2012. It was followed by Gilding the Lily-pad, a "companion novel" for The Frog Prince that follows the same storyline but is told from Roman Lorraine von Habsburg's point of view. The Frog King is in the works!

Elle lives in Denver, Colorado, and keeps a miniature dachshund named Bacon around the house to provide comic relief.
