I get it that it's a reality TV show and we only see the things that the producers want us to see, blah, blah, blah. But there is something rather fascinating about the idea of a bunch of guys that would take these kinds of risks in a hostile environment with no guarantee of a payoff. Throw in the mechanical and electrical engineering and big machines required to make this all work and you have a show that guys who like this crap can only dream about doing. I'd almost like to take a month off work and go up there to help out just to experience the adrenaline rush of working hard, engineering solutions and seeing it all come together just for an ounce of gold.
I never knew a thing about gold mining until this show and thought mining was something you did in a tunnel. I had no idea of the scale involved to move massive amounts of earth to get an ounce of gold(or not!). The breakouts of how the equipment works(or fails) are the best parts of the show.
My favorite characters on the show are the Schnabels. How can you possibly not like a 17 year old kid that eschews video games, girls and tv to work 14 hour days running giant dump trucks, excavators, and loaders? His grandfather John is an awesome person that always seems to be happy even after Parker slams the excavator into the dump truck. They go into alot of background about John on the Aftershow episode that you got to see. A true American!

Todd and his father Jack Hoffman have fallen on tough economic times. They notice how gold has been rising in price and remember how Jack once mined for gold in Alaska. There's a whole lot of gold in Alaska if you can find it.

It seems that the Hoffman's friends are in equally poor financial condition. A core group of guys comes together under the Hoffman leadership, and they will each pay their own way to mine gold in Alaska. They could strike it rich or become even worse off, if that's possible.

There is a lot of suspense as the crew plans what will obviously be a dangerous venture. They get to Alaska and must cross a freezing river. This is just a small taste of what's to come.

It was clear to me from the start that I would not be able to do what these guys did. These men have been solving mechanical problems for many years and they know how to use all sorts of machinery, tools and equipment. They are physically and mentally tough.

The land is beautiful at Porcupine Creek. The guys get to setting up their equipment and planning their operations. John Schnabel, a 91-yr old successful miner, bring a lot of gold nuggets and gives tips on fining gold.

Jack just can't wait to get to the gold, and as he operates their excavator, he actually dents his truck - yikes!

The group has a lot of worries as bears lurk around their camp. Jimmy Dorsey was in a particularly difficult situation as he lacked a secure place to sleep. You've got to worry about bears at Porcupine Creek.

This episode showed the extreme eagerness of the men to get started and the fact that they were not nearly so well prepared as all had hoped.

Don't like most "reality" shows because everything is for the camera but enjoy this one. Seeing the boys overcome and have a season in the black was good. Camera work was pretty good and it's beautiful country. That said, I don't ever want to go there for a lot of reasons.

My family loves this show and since we only get "free" TV, we are so happy that we get to buy the season and watch it. We may be a little behind the "seasons" but it's perfect for re-watching on rainy days, cold snowy days, or even days when we feel sick. We loved being able to see how the camera crew films and the such as well. That was definitely a bonus in this season! I recommend this anyone who loves the Discovery Channel and watching such shows!
