Editorial Reviews

2012 five CD anthology from the German Electronic pioneers, the follow-up to the box set The Virgin Years: 1974-1978. Starting with the live album Encore (1977), this box set contains some of their biggest selling albums joined by rare non-album tracks. Apart from Encore, this set also includes the albums Force Majeure, Tangram, Exit , White Eagle, Logos (1982) and Hyperborea (1983). EMI.

The actual recordings presented here are among some of my favorites of the era, and somehow still sound like "future music" even decades after the new electronic frontier they represented has become mainstream. The fact that some albums are split between CDs is not especially annoying to me because the original presentation on LP also had such "Side 1/Side 2" interruptions. Plus, the inclusion of a single with themes from the "Thief" soundtrack (Burning Bar and Beach Scene) was a nice solution to an exclusion I can only assume occurred because of licensing issues or a possible soundtrack-only collection.
One minor disappointment I had was that the discs came in a normal 5" multi-disc plastic jewel case. Though the case is sturdy enough, the somewhat oblong shape of Amazon's item image led me to hope that maybe the boxed set would be more elaborate.

Also redone by Andy Pearce the set collects their later Virgin output and is a no filler of TD.Nice to have them together in one package, you get art cover work reproduction for the most part and all albums flow together nicely. This and the earlier Virgin set are worthy purchases for completists. Set comes in a Jewel case

I'm sure any ardent collector or those who are aspiring for an MA or Phd in TD music must have all the virgin catalog in different releases be it in LP, cd, cassette, 8 track etc. But for anyone who is always on the move and would like to enjoy this collection in the car or out of earth, this comes in handy.7 albums in 5 cds and in one case the more convenient it is. Sound quality is close to the 1995 definitive remaster. The booklet details exact information taken from the individual albums plus an insert sourced from the encore LP sleeve. No new material except A and B sides from Encore and Thief or 4 additional tracks. One downside is the exclusion of the soundtrack Thief. It depends on anyones preference but Tangram and Logos were split into separate discs much similar to the original LP. A good buy for new collectors who don't have the cds yet. Suitable for travelers or those working abroad and left their collections back home. But for those who have a permanent address, there is no need, it will only be redundant. The A and B sides are very similar to the original only shortened. The next project should be the Virgin soundtracks by TD, now this will be great and something to look forward too.

I have owned the records since they were released , and I still have them.....they are all in good condition....

This CD collection means that I can play everything in my car....such tracks as the " Encore " suite , Kiev Mission ( Exit ) and
Tangram , suites 1 and 2 , will sound quite different in a smaller confined space.......

I'm a Tangerine Dream addict , and this collection will be a valuable addition to my library.

As with all their work , this collection represents significant period in the groups evolution ......I can recommend this collection without reservation...

Another successful purchase from Amazon online.............

If you are, like me, slowly replacing your old TD albums and cassettes with remastered versions, this is a great place to start (along with the companion 74 - 78 box set). Sure the packaging is basic, but 5 CDs (7 classic albums) for the $15 I paid is just a steal. I don't have to tell you that there's some great stuff here from the German electro-pioneers so if you're deliberating, don't. Now, if we can just have a Jive years box set!
