Book Description

July 3, 2001
Jacqueline Heriteau, named Communicator of the Year by the American Nurseryman's Association and coordinator of the Plant-A-Row for the Hungry campaign of the Garden Writers' Association of America, is well-known among Virginia gardeners.  With over 400 years of garden history, Virginia's 3-zone climate allows for nearly year-round gardening.  Jacqueline suggests that one of the best ways to learn about the plants most suitable to your landscape is to visit one of many magnificent public gardens that are found across the state, including Jefferson's Monticello in Central Virginia and Colonial Williamsburg Restoration in Tidewater, VA.  Jacqueline recommends 170 choice plant selections, including annuals, deciduous and evergreen trees, flowering bulbs, groundcovers, herbs, ornamental grasses, perennials, roses shrubs, and vines.  An entire chapter dedicated to creating ornamental water gardens adds a unique growing medium to the beauty of a Virginia landscape.  Most decidedly, Virginia gardeners will not suffer from a lack of interesting horticultural options.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books, January 31, 2009

This review is from: Virginia Gardener's Guide (Paperback)
Like most people, I have a number of garden books but have found none as valuable as this one. Specific plants (from d/eg trees, p/a flowers, vines, ground covers, etc) are described (pros and cons) and excellent planting info is provided. Each major section has an overview and each plant has great specific info. Planting and care info is simple and straight forward. Plants recommended are those that generally thrive in VA. This book never gets shelved -- I refer to it too often!

Please note, this is a (VA) plant/tree specific book -- not a design/plan a garden book.

My garden has completely turned around and I've received many compliments from neighbors (many asking what's my secret)! I would highly recommend this book -- it pays for itself in no time.
