5.0 out of 5 stars A Truly Wonderful Story About A Girl/Woman and A Horse That Warms the Heart, June 26, 2007
This review is from: Virginia Gentleman, a True Story (Paperback)
This is a truly WONDERFUL book. I couldn't put it down. It's a heartwarming story about the power of animals (one horse in particular) and their effect on our lives and souls. The story flows, cativates, and entertains. The author's style is warm and believable. She is so authentic and comes to appreciate life and what she has. I love when she says "anyone who thinks you have to die to get to heaven, has never been to my place." The book is full of precious lines like that. She made me laugh and cry and truly care about her, her life, her horses and her journey. I wish I knew how to get this book marketed. If handled correctly, I know it would be a VERY POPULAR BEST SELLER. Even though it's about a horse(s), it's more about life and making life worthwhile. It has very broad appeal. I wish all books were this good.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book I have ever read!!, July 8, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Virginia Gentleman, a True Story (Paperback)
This book is absolutely amazing. It made me sob, laugh, smile, sigh, and get chills down my spine. You don't have to be a horse lover in order to enjoy this book- (even though I am) you just have to be someone who wants a detailed, heart-warming story that you will never put down. Mary Mitchell Barnes describes the relationship with her horse, Chinkers, in such a touching way. She treated him like a human and a life-long friend instead of "just a horse." I think that is what really made this book fantastic. I am so glad I read this book because no other one can match this. A must read for anyone!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read but ......, October 12, 2011
This review is from: Virginia Gentleman, a True Story (Paperback)
I received Virginia Gentleman from my barn buddy, who gave me the book without finishing it. She doesn't show and she found all the "show stories" in this book to be somewhat boring.

I don't show either, but I went through all of them and "lived" with the author through her dark days and her "rebirth" because of her growing relationship with her horse. Having had several horses, I have been blessed to have had TWO such wonderful, emotional relationships, first with my Morab mare Roxy and more recently, with my precious TWH Sonny Boy.

When I got to the last twenty or so pages, I was flabbergasted that this girl who supposedly loved her animal so much, would be so nonchalant about his health and well-being when she discovers him munching from a bag of grain. She waits to see what happens instead of calling the vet immediately. Her horse's death is a direct result of her cavalier attitude toward a potential (and actual) life-threatening situation.

I was appalled and angry for her beloved Chinkers. He died because she didn't do the RIGHT thing. This story left me with a bad taste in my mouth toward the author. Old bag that I am, I sent the author an email to tell her what I thought.
