Virginia Hamilton broke brave new ground in children's literature, from her first novel Zeely, published in 1967, to her last, 2002's semi-autobiographical Time Pieces, issued after her death that year. The Virginia Hamilton Conference on Multicultural Literature for Youth at Kent State is currently in its 26th year.
