Thumbs Up,
By Washington DC Guy "Robert" (Washington DC) - See all my reviews

I would recommend this book if you're looking for something with great pictures and a brief narrative. The photos were good in that they weren't all taken in the summer, as in most books of this type. It was nice to see these historic homes in the spring bloom, fall colors and winter white-scape. Of course the summer shots were also beautiful. A good book for your own or for a gift.

In my opinion this coffee table book is the one by which all others should be judged. Gleason is one fine professional photographer who needs to expand into yet more regions on this same subject of old plantation homes

If you love to travel, but can't always hop in the car or on a plane to do so, and especially if you love to travel to historical locations like I do - then you're going to LOVE this book. The photos in the book are just like standing there right in front of the homes. I live in Virginia and have seen several of these homes in person, so I can say that with honesty! If there was anything negative to say about the book, that would be that there's not enough interior pictures, and I'd love a little more about the history of each home. This is a great book though - a great way to "armchair" travel. It's a little on the large size, (it's wide, not tall) so it probably won't fit in a bookshelf unless you have real deep shelves. Would make for a great coffeetable book! Sit back and enjoy the tour of these beautiful old homes.

Gleason really excelled in books of this kind, he really knew how to capture these old grand buildings. This book is first rate and it covers all of the well known homes as well as some that may not be so familiar. All of his books of this genre are consistantly top notch. The colors are vibrant and just pop off the page. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the grandeur of the Old South, it's just amazing how many of these houses survived the Civil War, with battles often within earshot of the veranda.

I have lived in Virginia about 30 years and have seen most of the plantations in this book. I currently live in the midwest now. The
photos and descriptions of the homes in the book is great and is a must for anyone interested in Colonial homes and plantations.

I like the book, but I am glad that I bought a used copy (cheaper) through the Amazon listed sellers. I thought that some of the photos should have been taken from a different view to get the best photo. Also, some of the photos have no comments about them, and for a couple I was not sure to which house they applied, or what room, or house location. My book did not come with a dust cover in case the info was there, but it would have been nice to know in the first pages the name of the house on the cover, without having to wait to find it.
To some it up, nice book, but but a good used version.
