Book Description

December 27, 2005
You can admit it-you're a virgin. Everyone was at one point. And no, we're not talking about sex. We don't care who you've slept with (okay, we do, but that will have to wait for another book). What we're talking about is that you've never before been to a wine tasting, bought real art (posters from college don't count), had a personal trainer, nor known the proper way to eat or order sushi. Life is full of firsts-thankfully this book is here to help. This perfect guide for Virgins, non-and Born-Again Virgins, makes sure that your first times (or second or third) are done right. Filled with advice from Go-to-Girls who are experts in their fields, A VIRGIN'S GUIDE TO EVERYTHING is like having a cool, older sister who's always willing to show you the way.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Though properly eating a lobster might be tougher than pulling off down-dog in yoga class, these situations, and dozens of other non-milestones, get equal shrift in this breezy compilation of been-there-done-that advice. Focusing on women's little firsts, this big-sister-in-a-book feels nearly conspiratorial as it explains the ins and outs of lining up a shrink visit, asking for a raise, throwing a cocktail party, buying art or going to the opera. McCutcheon, who says she has a habit of telling people things they'd rather not hear, enlists the help of "Go-to Girls" in each section who explicate on the finer or more obscure points of each mini how-to. Though the advice here is helpful, it's far from comprehensive (buying a car, for instance, is neglected), and some readers may feel the writing is geared more toward teenagers than twenty-somethings. Nevertheless, it's a well-intentioned book that'll find its way into many a care package.

5.0 out of 5 stars Readers & Writers Ink Book Club Review, January 13, 2006
This review is from: A Virgin's Guide to Everything: From Sushi to Sample Sales--A Novice's Handbook to Doing It Right (Paperback)
I like everything about _The Virgin's Guide_: the color, double entendre title, the logo, the semi-pocket size, and the information. Reading it is like biting into a cherry - juicy information and lots of substance. My book club members and I will find this information a great springboard for conversation during our next outing. The information ranges the spectrum - details for the savvy world traveler AND the homebody who wants to be sophisticatedly informed about social proprieties.

4.0 out of 5 stars So much fun, January 25, 2006

I thought this was a cheeky, fun little book that serves as a great introductory guide to a wide range of activities and interests. I had no idea i was eating sushi incorrectly! It's definitely not comprehensive on any of the subjects but if you want light, usefel tips with just a touch of girliness, this is for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helped This Virgin, April 10, 2006
This review is from: A Virgin's Guide to Everything: From Sushi to Sample Sales--A Novice's Handbook to Doing It Right (Paperback)
I think this book is great. When I graduated from college last year, I realized to my dismay that I didn't automatically become that sophisticated "adult" I expected to be, and I've had a tough time finding quick answers to a lot of my "how to" questions. Thanks, Lauren, for doing the research (and finding the "go-to girls") for me! I expect I'll be referring back to the guide often.
