There seems to be a little confusion about the Virgin's Tale albums. What is pictured here is Vol. 2, and the track listing is for Vol. 2, so that is what I will review. (Vol. 1 is not very good at all, so I think, perhaps, the reviewer below was actually reviewing Vol. 1)"Virgin's Tale 2" covers the obscurer releases of '86 and '87, which, of course, is the period of the first of Almond's several magnum opi, "Mother Fist." These were the releases that were a little too experimental for a-side or album inclusion, and so found their way to the public mostly as b-sides and compilation appearances. The more experimental and obviously fun-loving (in an admittedly morbid sort of way) nature of these tracks lends them an energy that makes this compilation even better than the brilliant "Mother Fist." Some of the highlights include the misanthropic "World Full of People," its throbbing drums draped with slashes of violin and horn. "Pirate Jenny," a truly strange song, is sung from the point of view of a bloodthirsty female pirate. "Jackal Jackal" and "Broken Hearted and Beautiful" anticipate the sound that Dead Can Dance would find for themselves in the late 80s. "I'm Sick of You Tasting of Somebody Else," my all-time-favorite Almond song, is a bouncy little romp sung by a cuckold bemoaning his difficult life and casting about weakly for appropriate revenge. An album of great breadth and depth, full of standout tracks, "Virgins Tale 2" will delight newcomers and fans alike.

This album could give pretentious, melodramatic drivel a bad name. After hearing this sonic mishap, I grimace every time I hear "Tainted Love" -- not because I dislike that song, but because having a radio hit at one time probably helped Marc Almond to get A Virgin's Tale made.
