This review is from: Virtua Fighter Sega Genesis 32x (Video Game)
Ive read so many bad reviews for this game, and watched so many bad youtube videos that I was convinced that this was a waste of money and not worthy of a spot in my collection. I just recently got a 32x, and my expectations were low but apparently not low enough. My first batch of games Star Wars Arcade, 36 Great Holes golf, and Virtua Racing, all of which I thought would be great additions to my already vast Genesis collection, were completely terrible. I was thinking that the 32x was a complete waste of time and that I would not invest another dollar into games for it(except for Knuckles Chaotix which I will get soon, but am skeptical about how good it is).
I liked Virtua Fighter 2 for my Saturn, 5 was ok for ps3, but I really liked Virtua Fighter 4 on ps2, that game really got me interested in the franchise and going back to play VF 2 enough to fully realize its brilliance as being one of the greatest video games ever programmed. While at the Retro game shop I found Virtua Fighter for dirt cheap and decided to give it a chance, I was surprised at how good this game truly is. The music and sound effects are the absolute best out of any game on the 32x, uncharacteristically good music and sound for the notoriously bad sounding 32x. Akira's scream sounds awesome, and the music in the fighter select screen is amazing. I really like the oriental, techno style of the music in this game, very nice. The graphics are primitive and blocky, but you got to remember that at the end of the day this is after all a Sega Genesis game, and as that this game looks amazing, great frame rate, quick speed, smooth animation, this is a great looking 3d game compared to other 3d video games of the era. As a true Sega Genesis enthusiast, I think this game looks great on my blast processor! However, if you've been spoiled by the latest and greatest in video game graphics, I can understand how the initial appearance of this game could be hard to get past. The best thing about this game is the classic Virtua Fighter gameplay. I had a ton of fun playing this with my Sega brand, 6 button arcade stick(though the game only uses 3 buttons), this game plays fantastic with that controller. The gameplay that makes Virtua Fighter 2 so great is here, its a distinct counter style of fighting that separates this series apart from other 3d fighters. Mindless button mashing is useless in Virtua Fighter, only smart, strategic combo's, pinpoint timing and effective blocking will work. Virtua Fighter is the thinking mans fighting franchise, and has very complex gameplay that takes a while to master. As a man with actual combat experience, I can say that the Virtua Fighter fighting game series(some better than others) manages to capture the tension of two combatants trying to outwit each other in a fight like no other fighting game be it 2d, or 3d. Once you get the controlls down, and learn how to really play the game youll realize that it captures that feeling of squaring off in the pocket against someone else, and letting your reflexes move you to take advantage of any opening your opponent gives you, while at the same time defending your own openings. Its the sweet science, the art of hitting and not getting hit, and the Virtua Fighter franchise simulates that science like no other, the very first one for 32x is no exception. Overall I was surprised at how much time was put into this port, this is solid programming from Sega. This game is to the Virtua Fighter series what Super Mario Bros 1 is to the Mario franchise, lacking the graphical eye candy, or bells and whistles that were in later games, but still worth playing if your a fan, as the core gameplay of later games is there.

IMO this title and mortal kombat 2 were the only highlights of the 32x. This game was a real treat tho, and i must say with a 6 button arcade stick its almost identical to the arcade counterpart. Loved the semi 3d enviroments and the whole fighting style of this game. I always preffered the 2d fighters to the newer 3d ones, but this game held a good middle ground, with complex moves for its time. Between this game and MK2 tho, thats sadly about all the 32x had to offer in the spectacular game point of veiw, yeah there were a couple other decent to midly ok titles for it, but nothing worth buying the deck for. I must say if you have a 32x and dont own this game your definatly missing out, and if you dont own MK2 for this console as well, i dont even see why you own a 32x lol

I loved the arcade version and the Saturn version of the 2nd VF. The original was a break through in graphics introducing 3-D models, generated by a computer. However, that is all this game has to offer pretty much the graphics are really outdated and aren't colorful like they are in old school street fighter and Streets of rage games. The game play is the biggest down fall by far!

32X was brought about to compete with the SNES's graphic engine. 32X was better, but it cost more as an add on so it failed. Also the rumors of Saturn and Playstation didn't help matters.
This game is a flagship game for the 32X. It is a great collectors peice, since it was such a historical game for the failing system.
