Space War
Take on the enemy fleet.

Blast away swarms of alien invaders in this gorgeous top-down arcade shooter. In Space War, players step into the role of a lone starfighter pilot taking on an entire enemy fleet.

Roll and weave your way through asteroid fields, enemy ships, and deadly laser-fire. Upgrade weapons, keep your shields up, and make your way towards the final battle! At over one million downloads, Space War is one of the most popular shooting games available on Android.

Gameplay

Space War is a top-down arcade shooter in the tradition of classic arcade games such as Galaga and Space Invaders. Players control a lone starfighter with a set amount of health that they must use to navigate asteroids, enemies, and other hazards to survive. Space War uses touchscreen controls for an intuitive flying experience--simply touch and drag your finger across the screen to maneuver your fighter.

Pressing and holding on the screen will automatically discharge your weapons in rapid-fire mode. Periodically, weapons and other power-ups appear on the screen and may be obtained by flying over them. Collect different types of weapon upgrades, shields, and even scatter-lasers that can vaporize all enemies on screen with a single blast.

Graphics are OK. Not hd but ive seen much worse. Petty cut and dry game play. just drag your finger around the screen to move the ship that auto fires. its a good pick up and play game. ill definitely keep it. lots of different enemy ships and even reached a boss ship before i blew up.

could use a few more types of power ups.

2.0 out of 5 stars needs serious help September 6, 2011

(DROIDX) Good game but sound effects repeat themselves until you exit. Such high potential to be a great game but needs the sound issue resolved. If sound is off, it's fine.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ehhhh...almost 3. September 6, 2011

The graphics are actually pretty clean, but they just aren't very smooth. The gameplay is almost choppy, but the controls are perfectly fine, its hard to explain. Your health can take a hit even if u shot the asteroid before it touched your ship. Its odd, lol.

4.0 out of 5 stars You have to understand how to play.... September 6, 2011

The controls are fine, just hold your finger on the screen and move it around. It's not supposed to be single fire.

Only negative point is the lack of "lives". Starting over everytime just sucks.

Solid FREE app.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blast away, my friends September 6, 2011

Space War is a worthy variation on the old 'asteroids' theme and, at least when played with a stylus on a tablet (XOOM, Honeycomb) blasting away at space rocks and enemy ships while avoiding their missiles and making sure you don't confuse the mines for upgrades is pure joy. The graphics are great - I have no problem calling them HD and the voice and background music are very much in tune with the overall 'retro' style of the game.

GAMEPLAY

It's as simple as they come. You touch the screen (trackball apparently is supported) and your spaceship goes wherever your fingertip or the tip of your stylus tells it to go. When played with a stylus, the tip of the stylus can be about half an inch behind the your spaceship so it doesn't obstruct the view. On a tablet the game responds quickly and precisely to my commands. Gameplay may be different on a smaller screen. Yes, your spaceship's moves are a little jerky (not smooth) but anyone who played games at an arcade back in the 80's (I have) should be familiar with the behavior. And, remember, this is a 'retro' game on purpose.

Your ship fires continuously so you don't need to worry about that and you can get upgrades such as rapid fire, twin guns, spread fire, shield, X-ray burst, health and so on. You avoid hitting and shoot at anything that looks unfriendly or a hazard (big rocks) and you pick the upgrades and you keep doing it until you die. Then you make a note of your 'hi score'. Of course, things start slow and easy and they get increasingly faster and more complex.

There are 3 levels of difficulty, two musical scores or 'mute' and you can pause the game at any time.

Anyone concerned with the 'rights' you grant the game, this is as clean as they come.

3.0 out of 5 stars Android devs need to step up their game September 6, 2011
Verified Purchase
This game isnt horrible, Ill start with the "HD" claim. It's not, not on my Transformer tablet, where HD should mean HD. Not too bad on my Thunderbolt but I think its the low end graphics that throw it off.

Not trying to be harsh, but I also have an iPad 2, where even the sucky games at least look good. Ive seen some great games come to Android, but usually they come from iOs first. I think if developers like this, put more money into a high quality graphic artist it would help, especially when you are rehashing higher quality games (see AirAttack HD for a similar game with great graphics and higher quality gameplay).

This game just lacks quality visuals, smooth controls, as well as music that I would expect from a paid app. (hello, Herbie Hancock wants his song back). Gameplay is repetitive and just "meh" (unlike the previously mentioned games's escalating craziness.

Bottom line, if your just going to make a copy of a game, please put more effort in it at least make it look good. We need devs to step up their games,it would be better for the platform I think.

But its not total garbage but it could be much much better.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nothing special September 6, 2011
By Range

I'm a big fan of shoot em up games, so when I saw a free one I got my hopes up. Then I remembered "You get what you pay for". This game isn't amazing by any standards. The music and sound fx get old fast, the graphics are very plain and boring, and it gets old fast. The controls were just about the only good part. Not a bad game, but not really worth the time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Basic game, nice graphics, bad controls. HTC EVO. September 6, 2011
Verified Purchase
Overall nice looking, though repetitive, graphics.
Game play is simple, sort of galaga like. Not as engaging as something like Sylphed or Raiden.
No issues installing or running on the HTC EVO.
Aside from maybe being a bit bland, the downside to this game is a lack of touch screen controls. I don't know that the controls are better on a device with a keyboard or more buttons, but on the touch screen you just drag your finger against the screen and the ship follows. It ends up lacking any precision and feels clumsy. Simply having a dpad and fire button built into the GUI would have worked much better.
Over all below average but not horrible.
