Product Description

105 Virtual Hikes of the Mt. Hood National Forest is a hiking guide available on CD. Although it was programmed to operate in a Windows enviroment, it appears to work well on Mac also. The guide has all of the usual features of any printed hiking guide, but the additional features of over 4300 trail photos. These images are viewed by moving your cursor along the camera icons on the trails. The photos were actually taken at the location indicated and not some random shot. This guide includes a hike difficulty calculator and a calorie burn calculator. The CD also has an outstanding wildflower guide organized by color. The common names are used rather than the Latin names. The CD also has a beautiful 100 image screensaver, which is available in both standard and widscreen. All 100 photos are also availble in both formats to be used as desktop images. Another significant feature of this hiking guide is the trail location guide. Not only are there excellent written directions for finding the trailheads, but each hike has a road map with mileages between intersections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic maps, photos, trailhead directions July 29, 2012
Traditional hiking guidebooks seem kind of flat footed and un-inspirational compared to this CD !

I originally was attracted to this CD because my trail guidebook has such poor maps, and I really don't want to buy USGS quad maps for the entire region, and yet I also don't want to solely rely on a GPS gadget.

The CD has fantastically clear, colored, perfect scale topo maps. I sometimes find the most challenging part of a hike outing is finding the trailhead, and this CD also has well thought out maps to the trailhead. It starts with a distinctive regional map illustrating all the major areas on the Mt. Hood. So, unlike a trail guidebook where one has to guess where unfamiliar areas are, such as the Opal Creek Wilderness, the regional map just SHOWS you.

I like the photos-- they are inspirational, and motivate me to get out on a trail. I don't have lots of time to devote to hiking, so I like to 'preview' a trail a pick something suitable to my mood & the weather. I've already explored 2 new trails since buying the CD last week.

I like the technology -- it's a simple CD, all links work (printing out a map, looking at flowers, etc.), and after getting so frustrated with some software (usually because it's too complex with never-ending updates), it's a breath of fresh air to have something that will never say "your java script is out of date", but then loading new versions doesn't work.

Well thought out & well executed. I still like thumbing through a guidebook for ideas, so I use my book & CD together. There are lots and lots of hikes and photos, yet the CD doesn't eat up a lot of room.

Anyone who enjoys hiking in the Northwest should consider this CD a must-have resource. It's a perfect way not only to pace my own hikes, but to know whom to invite.
